A couple of years ago a few of my friends when to the inaugural running of the Mojave Mile. They had to get a lot of safety equipment in their cars and on their bodies to run.
How far is the Texas mile from our location? Pony Express, Silver State? |

Five young men were killed early Saturday at Greystone Airport in Florida when the BMW M5 they were traveling in crashed in a high speed accident after being driven on the actual airport strip. Behind the wheel was 18-year-old Joshua D. Ammirato and riding along in the car were four of his friends. They were returning from a party. According to local news source Ocala, the car skidded at the end of the runway, turned sideways and then sailed up an embankment before crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. The car, which was registered to Ammirato’s father, broke into two pieces after hitting the tree. Details are still being released and the speed at which the car would have been traveling is still being determined. Interestingly, Ammirato posted messages on a M5 forum only 12 hours before the crash seeking advice on how to shift gears smoothly when the car was in its max 500hp setting. Some of his posts included: "The problem is when I'm going pedal to the metal pushing 140 and upshifting, there tends to be thud noise with the gear change," and “I am beginner when it comes to high performance cars as I am only 18”. |

But if something goes wrong.... everyone and their mother will. And if you record it.. cover your plates. Don't be those Durps on youtube with exposed plates and saying their racing in Mexico with visible Texas interstate signs in the video.

It's too bad you don't have access to the runway from fast and furious 6, here is a photo for a more in-depth explanation:
If you can do it and are 100% certain you won't have legal issues, I'd say do it when you get the chance!! -Nick C.

All airports are controlled. Small town or big city. Just the 'Control' Varies.

It has been shown in the past that teenagers piled into one car is a recipe for disaster. The driver was not fully focused PERIOD, too many people in the car equals distractions! Being 18 he is not aware that increased weight equals more distance to stop! That fact that they were traveling way above the speed limit and not having pre run the area also seems to be factor? But then again, you don't need an airport to crash a car! I warned both of my kids when they started driving about being piling into a car that it's your friends that get you into trouble driving, you are at their mercy when they are driving. It was made more real by the fact that a kid from their high school did the same thing, had friends in the car and hit a railroad bridge two years before. |

Not true. Not all airports have a control tower with controllers. Since the OP said a controller is willing to risk his job to get him onto the field you can safely say this will be done at a controlled field. Which is a federal crime if you take one step onto a movement area without required certification or escort. You might as well try to drive your car down the runway at O'Hare in Chicago. The punishment would be the same. |

Like he said its a 1.8 mile runway which means its a 10,000ft runway which makes it at worst a regional airport. Pretty much any airport with a 10,000ft runway is gonna be controlled henceforth the controller is gonna let you in. Your asking for trouble and just might get it! Dude there are plenty of empty roadways in NM to do that on that won't be a federal offense of some sorts. Besides you done screwed up anyways posting it here. This forum can be used against you just like Facebook and all them other things.

Yes it would be a huge adrenaline rush!! Yes I would love to do it! Yes it would most likely be at night time! (I'm not comfortable with making this run at night.) After talking with a couple people personally I'd feel more comfortable if it was obviously done during the day, and if management knew. I think if I have direct communication with the tower it may be alright, however I feel more comfortable doing it when people know and proper measurements are taken for everyone's safety. (Espescially mine as I have an 17 month old daughter I want to come home to) I do think if proper instructions are followed and I sign a liability waiver, they may actually let me! Who knows!! But yes there are tons of open road ways here in NM and I could easily have family and friends staged throughout a 2-3 mile stretch of hwy! I've also tried talking to other agencies about road closures to test the car in a controlled environment! Thank you everyone for your responses I have read them all and will continue to do so! If I can get a controlled environment I'll post vids and pics. If not......... Well then I guess I'll have to find some other way to share the news!! Haha

Somthting to keep in mind, Federal prisons are much more plush than state prisons. They both provide free health care, free food and lodging, and free whatever you can imagine.
In my local area, at least once a year there is a car club that rents the 10,000' runway. They race everything from exotics to local rice burners. Maybe look into something like that which is legal and sanctioned. Good luck man, I totally get it that you have a family to be around for, but at some point in time, we get to have some fun too... |
