amsoil z rod first impressions

so i have had amsoil z rod in my car for a few hundred miles now. i changed from gibbs after a 60ish degree road course day where gibbs failed dealing with heat. i switched to amsoil at the recommendation of my tuner, Ryne at CMS.

it quieted down my drivetrain..all i hear now is my tiny cam and exhaust. it looks good and feels good. the real test will be in early april with my next road course day. i will probably send the oil off to be tested and take some pictures of it before during and after for all to see.

we will see how it deals with heat...i will add a real oil cooler in the near future.

Not trying to thread jack or turn this into a "Which oil should I use" thread, but under normal/spirited driving how did the Joe Gibbs LS30 hold up??

I've seen everyone recommend that for Cammed cars, and I still haven't seen solid opinions on upgrading the weight of oil?

What do you mean by failed dealing with the heat?

I think he is referring to the viscosity of the oil breaking down under extreme heat from road racing or tracking the car. I know it's possible for any oil to break down from excessive heat, but I'm trying to get more info because I plan on switching to LS30 when I do my Cam swap and Don't want to make the "Wrong" choice when it comes to valvetrain protection.

Seems more an issue of the junk OEM oil "cooler", any oil will cook under sustained abuse. And without an oil analysis saying the oil failed just having it see an extreme temp doesn't mean it failed. Hence my question for more info.

dont need to send oil to a lab to know it smells burnt and looks like shit. to be fair it did see back to back road course days without a change and long drives (3ish hours) to and from the track

Were you data logging at all? I'd still say any oil would likely have failed under those conditions. Oil cooler is going on when sticky tires do to avoid the same issue, hopefully a bigger radiator too. I definitely don't want to cook a bearing and the added capacity will help an equal amount as controlling the temps.

I've had the temps climb a lot on cool days as well. Its the abuse not the weather doing us in.

I remember in another oil thread that you said you were gonna try dominator since the Zrod was not in yet. What did you conclude?

I have dominator 15w50 in my car now and its at 1500 miles, no track days yet. May do my very first track day in September or oct when the temps here in Tx drop a bit. Plan to run this same oil thats currently in the car at the track day, then change to the Zrod 20w50.

I plan on alternately running Zrod then dominator because the Zrod has a good corrosion inhibitor package and the dominator doesnt. The car is not a daily driver but does get driven about 100-200 miles a week.

So, how did the dominator perform vs the Zrod at the track in your opinion?
