Whats the best octane to run in the LFX?

87, 89, 93 all with ethanol or 90 octane with no ethanol but its hard to find. Ive been running 93 for a while.

This is a topic where you'll get lots of opinions, and has been much-discussed in the past.

The LFX supposedly has 2 timing tables, but can't adjust to the higher octane table without a tune. Using higher octane gas may reduce some knock retard, but the LFX sees a more limited benefit than the LLT.

You can run 87 octane and things will be fine, though you may be losing a small (probably unnoticeable) amount of performance, IMO.

I always try to run Shell 93. Tried different brands and for me the Shell 93 runs the best.

We get 91, tops, here in Phoenix, unless you get all exotic and buy "race" fuel.

My understanding is that there aren't specific timing maps that the LFX adheres to, but rather a range of allowed advance and the engine listens to its knock sensors, dialing in timing retardation as knock becomes detectable to them.

But what do I know? I sell floor covering.

I run 89 in mine. Unless I'm driving long distance, then I run 92 or 93 for the better gas mileage.

The LFX came from GM being able to run 87 no problem, which is amazing considering its 11.5 to 1 compression ratio. I personally put 93 in it cuz i tend to run her hard and knowing it wont hurt. At the end of the day you should be fine with 87, even with basic bolt ons. Going F/I is a different story though.

This is the conversation I was remembering: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...39#post6465539

Granted, one of the participants' "knowledge" has since been brought into question, but I would still trust GretchenGotGrowl's and KMPrenger's opinion.

But I'm just regurgitating the knowledge of others. I can't claim to have firsthand experience.

What do I know? I carry morbidly obese people down stairs for a living.
