Question First oil change

I bought my car on July 1, 2013 and have 1242 miles on it. I am supposed to take it back to the dealer for my first oil change at 3,000 miles but I won't hit that until next spring. Should I just go and get the oil changed before winter or wait until spring next year?

Change it, bad for it to sit all winter with old oil in it. My 2010 has 4k on it change it once a year at least .

yeah change it 3month or 3000 miles for regular oil whatever comes first
or 6 months or 6000 miles for synthetic.

usually whether it's a new car or a new engine build, I'll change the oil at the first 500 miles for break-in to get most of the break-in debris out of the engine.

Doesn't the car come with break in oil from the factory and normally the dealer discourages early oil changes so the break in oil can do its thing?

Why do you say this? If the vehicle is going to sit, and not be run, then I would much rather get the old oil out with all the potential condensation out of it prior to operation, and not subject my new oil to that condition. I can not imagine why old oil in an engine that is not running would do it any harm.

Because you have all kinds of acids that form in the oil from the combustion process. This is corrosive and shouldn't be left in the oil pan.

The proper way to store a car is change the oil before you put the car away. The little bit of condensation that forms over the winter will burn off, and because the oil is clean, there will be no contamination in the condensation. Also, depending on the length of time for storage, you should pull the plugs and put a couple of drops of oil in each cylinder (prevents pistons from corroding to the cylinder walls), or fog the cylinders with a fogging solution (Seafoam makes a good one). Usually if storing under 6 months you don't need to fog the motor.

The only reason to change the oil that soon is because many of us are apparently old and stubborn. Based on everything I've read (and there are several topics in the engine section with a lot of information and external references) it's fine either way, personal preference.

I'd wait til Spring and have it serviced.

Wait till spring, when you do start to drive it just make sure the oil is up to operating temp before you drain it and then let it drain for awhile. The Dexos oil GM puts in at the factory is a synthetic, not the blend. It calls for a minimum of a dexos certified semi synthetic but it comes with full syn.
As for a better oil filter use the AC Delco pf48r, black filter. Its a little more money but worth it, ZR1 oil filter.

Todays oils are made to a much higher standard, go on the internet and do your research. You're just throwing money away doing it sooner. The interval on your car is 1 year or 7500 miles, the 3 months or 3000 miles is outdated. While I don't go the 12 months or 7500 interval, I do 5000 miles on my '10 SS which is my daily driver, which is every 3 months, and every year on my '12. My '12 SS only sees 3k a year tops. I run Mobil1 in the '10, and Amsoil in the '12.
After 74000 miles, the oil still comes out fairly clean on the '10 do to intervals I change it at.

I talked to the service department in depth about my first oil change, as I was reading about people here on the forum changing out their oil early (within first 1200 miles). I was told that it was unnecessary and that I should wait until 5000. As stated above, the oil used by GM is suggested to be changed out at 7500. He said that I can do it around the 5000 mi mark and that's being safe and still not changing it so soon.
