Turning off DRL

OK if everyone knows this just delete this. But I have owned this car for a year and a half and just found this out. First off , I am not a fan of the DRL and I have seen threads about adding a bypass harness or something and figured that was too much work. Anyway, I twisted the headlight knob to the left and noticed a message on the DIC that the automatic lights were off. I got out of the car (in the driveway) and walked around to the front. And to my delight the DRL were off. They will remain off until you shut the car off and turn it back on.Then you have to turn the knob again.

That's pretty cool. Just one more safety feature forced down our throats that we don't need. Although I know one guy who will say we NEED them. LOL

I will be that guy. I'm sure you don't do this, but there are many around here that are too freakin' lazy to turn any lights on at dusk/daybreak. They have dark cars and in the right conditions, when you are pulling onto the highway, you CANNOT see these cars. Low profile, dark lighting, dark road, poor vision, etc. Then when someone pulls out in front of them, they are all pissed off. Well, turn your freakin lights on you lazy piece of crap.

So, GM did what they always do, fix this laziness brain cell some people have. Because I don't care if you can see me, but if I can't see you, I will pull my full size tank of a truck into your little car.

Ahhhh, now I feel better. Thanks for letting me be "that guy"

Perhaps you need to do some research before making declarations.

There are numerous studies showing that DRLs make cars more easily seen during daylight hours.

Don't take my word for it - do the research.

Canada had the law prior to it being passed in the U.S. - and the evidence was overwhelming that DRLs reduce the chances for an accident.

DRLs are legislated via federal law - both in Canada and the United States - that all motor vehicles must have daytime running lights. While I'm not an expert at the law - the law DOES spell out total light output and what the minimum size for the lights must be.....

to the OP -- you're correct in that you can shut the DRLs off that way - and if you have an RS - (2010 to 2013 -- or a '12-13 or 14 ZL1 - ) one click to the right after turning the knob to the left will turn on the halo lights. (which usually makes Mustangs wet themselves... )

On the '14 RS, the DRLs ARE the Halos - and further, when you put your turnsignal on - the halo on that side of the car turns off while the signal is flashing......

You'll note that the halos on the '14 are much brigher - in order to meet DRL standards....

Anytime I get in my non RS SS during the day, I automatically turn off my DRL's. I'm not a fan of them either, especially if the headlights are used as them. I'll only leave them on in the daytime if the weather is lousy.

JFTR There is no law REQUIRING DRLs in the U.S. They are allowed but not required. GM petitioned the NHTSA to mandate their requirement but it was denied in 2009.

In denying the petition, NHTSA said: (NOTE: their words and opinion, NOT necessarily mine.)

"(…)the agency remains neutral with respect to a policy regarding the inclusion of DRLs in vehicles (…) we do not find data that provides a definitive safety benefit that justifies Federal regulation (…) manufacturers should continue to make individual decisions regarding DRLs in their vehicles."

you beat me to the punch... i was just about to say how there were not mandated in the states.

i know my '13 ram doesnt have them...

a lot of manufacturers you can turn them on with programming now days.
