California smog check time
If you purchased and picked up your Gen5 Camaro in 2009 even though it's a 2010 model what is the first year the smog check is required in CA?
I believe there will be a mass scramble to get one's Camaro smog legal due to mods, I'm one. Any tips other than returning to stock, what about tunes won't they show up? Is there still a sniffer test? Thanks!

If I am not mistaken I think new cars will need to be smogged in their 7 year. I have also heard that there may be changes to the smog inspection in the years to come that could eliminate the visual inspection part and will use OBD2 information instead, but don't bank on that its just rumor so far.

First inspection for anyone that bought their car in '09 will be due in '15. They allow you to skip the first 2 inspections and require you to test on the 3rd, which is on the 6th year of ownership.

That gives us all time to find "friendly" smog shops.

Not all shops offer a OBD inspections, still threre are afew who sniff. but this will not get you out of a visual inspection. some tunes will be seen on the screens. some will not.

I wouldn't count on locating a "friendly" smog guy as my first option....I've used a local independent guy for quite a while....The new "Star-Certified" deal is a whole new ball game....
....Basically it boils down to not being able to fudge on anything...The Sacramento data-base is a monster....They look at everything, models, percentage of failures across the board...Smog guys will get called on the carpet if they look fishy at all...Fines, penalties, equipment costs, all too much to risk these days for smog guys... You might get lucky with one, but don't look for the same guy to run through everybody on a regular basis that wouldn't pass anywhere else... It'll be interesting....good luck. |

That sucks for you S. Californians. Up here in the north they don't make us smog anything until it is sold.

It is a mixed bag....Smog check rules are based on the county it's registered in...The state has different "regions", etc....
Nobody really knows yet what procedure the smog checks down here will entail...but I'm just sayin' once they get it rolling, the Star-Certified thing has tightened the screws on the smog check guys. |

They will do visual, no E.O on a sticker under the hood for aftermarket parts/ and or OBD readout failure and you fail. OBD needs all readiness checks to be working, o2's and such, and all must be in the range as intended.
