Gears on L99 SS

I tried to do a search for a thread on gears... not so fortunate... so...

Has anyone upgraded from the 3.27 gears in their L99 SS?

I'm looking to step up! 4.11s

In a very short time - I'm noticing while cruising around town the car
wants to be in 4th/5th gear... which drops the RPMs very low.

RE-gearing - i don't mind that my RPMs will jump up... its an A6.

chime in pls

The auto transmission is geared more aggressively than the transmission so you don't have to go with as much gear to get a similar result. By upgrading the factory 3.27s in the stock A6 equipped Camaro SS to the 3.73s you will realize an equivalent torque gain of approximately 15% or 61.5 lb.-ft. of torque and still cruise at only 2050 RPM at 70 MPH. 3.91s will realize an equivalent torque gain of approximately 20% or 82 lb.-ft. of torque and cruise at 2150 RPM at 70 MPH.

I had 3.70 put in by Lingenfelter. I think the hot unit they have out now is 3.91.

Anything else done to the car, or any plans for it?

Even with the stuff I have done (in sig), I still kick around 3.70's or 3.91's. I'd like the car to have more sass from a roll.

The ideal and recommended ratio for a stock or bolt on L99 is 3.70s/3.73s. Due to the aggressive gearing of the tranny, 3.91s is almost undrivable. A few people like not be able to use 1st and 2nd gear at all and spinning tires at the slightest touch of the gas but most people will not. Forget about 4.11s. They are strictly for the M6.

I beg to differ Mr. Draco. I have 3.91 gears in my L99 and it is completely drivable. It works very well on the track. The only cure for spinning the tires is a lighter foot. Everyone said it was going to be violent with the low 1st gear in the 6L80E, but I don't find that to be the case, although the converter may have something to do with that. I'm 69 years old and I do not regret going with the 3.91s. No experience with 4.11s, so no comment on them.

My other mods are Vengeance Stage 3 cam, Vengeance Stage 2 heads, CAI, LT Headers, HF Cats, Borla mufflers, UDP, converter and MT drag radials on Weld 18" wheels. 477 rwhp and 427 ft-lbs torque.

My 62 year old wife drives the car w/o any issues whatsoever.

sounding like the consensus is 3.91s which I'm OK with. If the 4.11s are intended for the M6 thats cool. Again - all new to me - great learning experience. Thanks for all who have chimed in.

My A6 has the Cai, and Borla ATAK exhaust. After gears, we will dyno it.
i live 5 seconds from The Dyno Edge in Alb

Now - should I do Richmond? any particulars I should avoid?

thanks,

Richmond.

When they first came out they was the only company making gears for the 5th gen and the accounts of them grenadeing was fairly high. The Mustang crowd also shows a high failure rate with the Richmond gears. Richmond's quality control really has gone to crap over the past few years.

Either get the GM gears or a set of AAM gears (AAM makes the gear sets for GM). There are other companies out there but I have no experience with them.

What all has to change to due this mod?

Is it just a swap out gears change or does the dealer have to due this?

I love mine now but could always use a little more snap
