breaking in a V8 auto (oil) proper seal
i've read the thread in the 1le section recommending a different break in procedure from the manual.
is it the same for an automatic transmission or do i just follow the manual for proper break in? |

I've never seen a break in procedure that stated it only works on one tranny and not another.
I have the L99 and I didn't follow the manual. |

I didn't follow the manual either Draco. I made sure my car was warm and got on it - hard. I only had one chance to seat the rings, and I think I did it well, as I have 26,000 miles on mine and it doesn't use a drop of oil and my Blackstone Lab oil analysis came back looking solid after the second oil change had a sample analyzed after having been in the engine for over 9,000 miles.
But, everyone has their own thing. Do what you will, follow the manual...or don't. John B.

Im a firm believer in using dino oil during the first 500 miles to properly seat the rings. There have been many oil consumption issues in the V-8 and V-6 due to rings not seating. LS2 seemed worse than the LS3.
But, this is just one persons opinion. But I have never used a drop of oil in 3 different LSx engines.

just drive it and dont go over 4 grandfor 500 miles....
also check your oil every 1500 miles and add oil, youll probably be able to run 8 k miles and add a quart or two until you hit 30 to 40k miles |

I was over 4 grand RPM within a block of the dealership. I was at 6500 RPM within five minutes of leaving there, doing near-full-throttle pulls in 2nd and 3rd to ~6500, then neutral coast-downs while bedding the brakes.
I know my rings are seated. And I've NEVER had to add any oil, because it doesn't use any. John B.

Break it in any way you want. I just chose to listen to people who make and race engines, not lawyers who write manuals.

Every engine will gradually lose ring seal over its lifetime. You have less than 500 miles to make the initial seal before a glaze develops and the rings don't initially seal. Then that 50,000 mile rule could apply. It takes that long to wear that off and in the meantime you're burning oil because it's getting past the rings.
Sounds like your engine is pretty tight, though. I wouldn't give it another thought. Since when do they let engineers write manuals? You guys actually are knowledgeable. Here I thought they made lawyers do it so fools don't get all crazy with a new car and wreck it. My best friend of the past 40+ years' Dad used to work at Caterpillar in the tech center outside Peoria, IL as an engineer. They tested engines until they grenaded, if that even happened. When I was a kid back in the early 70's going to Mossville Grade School, I remember seeing those big Caterpillar plants being built.
