LS3 supercharger
Hey guys I hope you are doing well,
My friend has Camaro LS3 and he has some concerns about his project and I hope you guys can help him. His LS3 engine is full stroker! He is planning to install a supercharger but he's confused between two types: the positive displacement or the centrifugal. So do you have any ideas about the difference and which one is going to give him more power? Waiting for your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks Kin .

There's magnacharger, whipple, KB, and a couple others in the posi dept. They sit on top of the engine and compress the air right before it goes to the engine. The charge air is cooled via a water to air IC. Cetri's are basically a belt driven turbo. They cool the air via a air to air IC. Centri's with a good IC will typically give you better IAT's. Which is best is purely dependent on what you want to do with your car. This has been debated NUMEROUS times. We have a FI section for you to search around in. If you want indepth info, i'd suggest you search google. There's TONS of info about both.

Thanks for your response. Google will be a good place to search for something but I thought it would be better to start asking in this forum to get info from experienced owners.

I am not a supercharger specalist, but this is how I understand them.
the positive displacement: These are the ones that bolt onto the top of the engine, like the ones used on the ZL1. They require i little more work to install but take up a little less space.. They tend to be a little less drag on the engine when they are not being used. These are the preferred ones for manufacturers. They are great for low boost pressures, and they can't make huge psi number. the centrifugal: These are closer related to a turbo charger then to a positive displacement supercharger. They are basically a turbocharger compresser with the exhaust housing replaced by a pulley. Much easier to install, and can make big numbers. I'm sure that one of out modd gurus can exspand on this or correct anything I've miss stated. Question, did he build the stroker motor for a supercharger? Ideally, you want to know that your going boost when your building the motor. To make big numbers, you want to lower the compression and do forged internals. If you plan on staying N/A you want to keep the compression high for more power. Also, you would want different CAM profiles for N/A verses Boosted.

It would help to know a little more about his engine. What has it been stroked out to, what compression ratio is he at, what kind of power is he looking to make?

Really he should be looking at the 3 different types. Under PD: Twin-Screw and Roots and then non PD: Centrifugal. Centri and Twin Screw have the best top ends, centri builds boost with RPM so for EX: 6 psi and 6K redline ever 1K you're gonna make about 1 PSI of boost, twin screw and roots work on throttle position, they will build quickly up to max PSI at just under 2K RPM depending on their displacement and the engine, Twin-Screw is my personal favorite because you enjoy nearly as good of top end as a centri but with more power available lower down. I don't really like roots but it does make a ton of low end torque very quickly, but I've never found I needed any more seeing as the stock car can easily light up the tires and let alone with a twin screw on it. I would go with a whipple twin screw as KBs seem to run really hit IATs.
