Sounds like you are on the right path. There are a few key bushing upgrades that would benefit an application like yours but besides that you are pretty well covered.

Hey guys- sorry for the rookie question-but if you order a Cat-Back Exhaust (for Example Corsa Cat Back), does that mean they remove your catalytic converters? Or can you keep them on? Not sure the dos and donts of exhaust systems, I am currently considering buying a Corsa cat back and want to make sure I know what I am getting into / will I be able to pass inspection.

Thanks everyone!

No, you don't mess with the cats on a catback. A catback means they're changing everything from the cats back but not messing with cats

Exhaust is really obvious to me as the first thing to do.

It's noticeable, sounds great, weighs less, and can in no way interfere with the normal operation of the car. No chance of voiding your warranty or breaking anything.

Personally, exhaust is usually the first thing I HAVE to do to a car. I can not take a performance car that sounds like nothing. It drives me insane.

For sure. I've found my MRTv2 increases fuel economy on the highway as well. Kind of makes up for it by decreasing it in the city.

Gets worse in the city because I can't keep my foot out of it, because I love the soundtrack. And on the highway, the drone is bad enough that I don't want to stand on it. Have to get my helmholtz pipes welded on soon.

This is what I did.
1. Catch can. Gotta protect the motor before any harm is done by injesting all that oil.
2. Intake. The horsepower and noise is well worth it to me.
3. Ice-olator, or plenum spacer. You can't go wrong with either one. With the ice-olator you will open up a lot of the midrange power, and with the plenum spacer, you'll be able to open up the top end of the car.
4. Throttle body. Gotta get rid of that dead spot to get a more linear power curve.
5. Long tube Headers, or high flow cats. Reason why you should get headers, or high flow cats in my opinion is because it will negate the number 1 horsepower deficit in the car, the dual cats. Even if you put a full catback exhaust, you'll get little to no gains at all.
6. A good quality catback exahaust. Not only will you get a badass sound, but you'll also shed at least 50 pounds in weight, and if do get LT headers, or high flow cats, you'll extract the most power out of your exhaust system.

Do we actually have any evidence of significant damage from that oil though? Like.. It's oil... It's a nice rust inhibiting compound, and it's not plugging anything... The milky crap people pull from their cars is just moisture... i.e. PCV doing exactly what it is supposed to. That water will just get kicked right through the engine.

Most cars aren't modified, and it's not like we see an epidemic of cars going in for dirty intakes...

Plus, I'm worried that the various catch cans might freeze in cold weather, becoming blocked, and doing pretty significant damage when there's no functional PCV.

For instance, the GM catch can on the 1LE specifically states:

"A 1LE exclusive, this unique component ensures oil separation and drain-back during high-load cornering. Simple catch-can-type design screws into oil-fill port in the rocker cover of V8 and V6 models. Note: The PCV oil separator kit has been designed for off road use where temperatures are above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This part was not developed for winter driving conditions, so it will need to be removed and replaced by the production PCV, if operating in those conditions."

... So... I'm not so hot on the catch can.

The catch can would warm up as the engine does so freezing shouldn't be a problem. I can only speak my experience of not having a catch can for the first 18 months of having my car, owned from mile one. My car would hesitate, sputter, then I bought a used catch can from another C5 member. NIGHT and Day, No hesitation, clean manifold. As for the comment about cars not going in for service for dirty intake. The 24000 mile service is a Top End Cleaning...IE you pay $ to have the intake cleaned. Get a catch can!
