Considering all the repeated questions covered in this thread, I think it is time for a friendly bump.

I have the older design and I will need to file my CAI for my 2013 1LE. No big deal. I want to paint my CAI and the tube black. Should I use paint or Plasti Dip? Am I harming the thermal efficiency of the CAI?

Also I thought I had a dry CAI filter. Is that possible? I bought my CAI in 2011. The filter looks a little dirty, but it only has about 10,000 miles on it.

What do you mean you will have to "file" the CAI for your 1LE?

I think most people powder coat them, I'm not sure how well spray paint would work, but I am fairly confident that plasti-dip would not work well given the amount of heat it will endure. I would consider selling your system used and purchasing a new system in the black finish, you would probably come out much better cost & time wise as well as with a better finish.

Our filters are oiled, they always have been. After use the filter color will fade a little bit, but it is still an oiled filter. That filter probably has another 10k-20k+ miles before needing a "recharge", but moving some of the larger debris from it wouldn't hurt.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. This is the "file" mod i mentioned:

Just installed my recycled CAI tonight. I used my Dremel to do the filing, I did not need to go as deep as in the photo. I painted my CAI with some low gloss hi temp paint and the black CAI looks great in my IOM 1LE. I also added an ADM scoop and the Apex washer bottle relo set up. This mod along with my DRs will put me in the 12s for sure.

Just got mine installed today — finally, had a box with me on the back seat for two months! But as you can see, the engine bay is full of dust - freaking Moscow dirt, that's just from February to November!
We also get lots of snow during the winter and in general it gets really cold, and a lot of dirt, so that got me thinking (only after installing CAI!) whether I actually need CAI during the winter and may be I would be better with original intake and filter and install it back in April?

Oh, and BTW, that sound when the car gets going... Engine roars now!
