Adding Oil Since Driving in Manual Mode

I had to add oil in between oil changes since driving in manual mode on my L99. I have noticed that I drive harder in manual mode because the car feels more responsive and powerful.. Is this dangerous for my engine and maybe I should go back to driving in regular mode???

Apparently you tend to "wind it out" more when using your paddles, than the computer shift points in "D" or "Sport" mode. This would naturally lead to using a little more oil w/ continuous use of the paddles. The computer won't let you blow up your engine, even in full Manual mode, and so long as you keep an eye on your oil level it probably won't do any harm.

Personally, I rarely use the paddles - "Sport" mode (with the higher shift points) will allow you to jump on it harder without having to worry about when to shift.

Check it frequently if you always drive it that way...won't do any harm always using the paddles. Enjoy it like it's meant to be!

Not to speak for Stig, because he knows a whole lot more about these cars than I do... but the Catch Can traps most of the oil (and other crap) that goes through the PCV valve on it's way back into your throttle body to be "reburned" before being exhausted. The process is a pollution thing that tends to (in time) cause the formation of a lot of gummy deposits in your intake, eventually making it much less efficient in burning of the fuel.

If you have a catch can, it captures most of that crud before it gets back into your engine thus, keeping your engine cleaner and efficient for a much longer period of time. Cleaner intake, cleaner valves, etc. This is especially effective for V6 engines but benefits V8s as well. I have one and drain off a couple of ounces of crud at each oil change (every 5K miles) that would otherwise have gone back into my engine. Without one... the harder you run your engine, the more "blow-by" will get back into you engine.

Stig - please correct me if I'm incorrect on this (I know you will). ;-)

You pretty much nailed it actually.

So while you don't need a catch can, I'd strongly recommend getting one.

What kind of oil do you use? If you change the oil at every fill up you won't have this problem.

Your initial posting that started this thread was about the need to add oil since using the paddle shifters almost exclusively.

Now you plan on adding a catch-can for the above......do you plan on collecting the oil and putting it back in? Don't understand how the catch-can is going to help with your oil consumption...
