What you don't seem to understand is when you attempt to sell an item (whether it be a car or gold chain) to a BUSINESS who is in the BUSINESS of making money, you will always be low balled. At times you can counter their offer, but do realize you will NEVER get retail value.

Remember there are additional costs after they purchase your car. Inspection, advertisement, and commission to the sales person to name a few. All of these eat into any potential profit. This is BUSINESS......not a "Chevy not standing behind their product" issue....

Private party sales don't have these issues. When you sell to a private party, they have no intention of reselling, therefore they will always pay more.

To call people "sheep" was a big

You're mad your car depreciated, but we all KNOW that is what they do and we expect it. It seems like you didn't expect it though, but you claim you know they depreciate. Doesn't mean people are sheep, just means they are ready or don't care because they aren't selling the car, if you're going to be in and out of cars try leasing. I couldn't care less what my car is worth in the market because I will never sell it...

The resale value of these things suck.
Uh that's funny I read a article in Car Driver
and it stated the Camaro was in the top 10 in resale value guess it depends on how much you want to sell the car or how much the potential buyer wants it determines how much you can get for the car.

I think the mistake lies within your expectation.

Expectation: post on a Camaro forum for moral support and raise concern on the depreciation issue with 'nice' cars
Reality: bunch of people on Camaro forum are realists

We pay for convenience (sp?). If you take it to a dealer, we are paying them to take care of everything needed to transfer it out, smog it, BUY it, etc...

If you sell it privately, you get more, but have to put more effort and time

I had a 2011 Synergy victory red Camaro 2ss I found a 2012 zl1 at a dealership for 45,000 8500 miles I wanted this car bad I told the dealership all I wanted was the payoff which was 30,000$ I knew I could of sold her myself for 33-34K but I wanted the Zl1 so I figured I would eat 3 to 4 grand no big deal I would get the car I have been dreaming about and the dealer would make some coin to turns out they sold her for 35K but in the end I was happy and so was the dealership my point is do what is going to make you happy but expect the dealership to do the same if you can't do that then sell the car privately!!!

I get what you're saying OP,but cars are money pits,in all my years I have never come out ahead on a deal, the best thing to do is pay off the car early and then trade or sell around the fourth year, seems to work for me sometimes.Wish I could stand to own one car for a long time,so hard to do though!

Wow. Just wow.

Searching around, buying a new ZL1 under sticker isn't tough. Why? Because they have them and THEY AREN'T IN DEMAND. Not like they were out of the gate. Right now, the Z/28 is the hot ticket, and also the 16's are coming. People don't want to bit just yet. Thus...ZL1's sit. And sit. Anyone who's paying MSRP or over now for a new ZL1 isn't very business savvy IMO.

On the flip side, if they're "giving away" new ZL1s, you can surely bet they aren't looking to buy yours unless they get a big discount too. It's how basic economics works. Supply and demand. Right now, supply is king. Buyer's market.

This is why, in my sole opinion (which could be wrong) that GM is conveniently placing a hold on 1LE and ZL1 orders. Not JUST about the tires. Manipulating a bit of supply. Otherwise, they'd still be accepting orders, you just wouldn't see it in production until the weather got a bit better.

If you act like cattle, then I guess they own you. Kellys blue book value on a 13 (and mine is a 14) is 60k. So they can easily sell mine for 60 also. Funny how some people just cant see the light, when the salesman himself told me the offer was weak and that he was going to try to see what he could do about it. I was thinking 57k and they can sell it for 60-61K. ZL1 convertible is loaded 65k car before taxes and destination charges ect.
Forget your dealer. Sell it to Kelly's Blue Book. Good luck and please let us know when the informative folks at Kelly's send you the check.

You don't even have to drive it off the lot to get hit on the initial depreciation. The minute you do the paper work and the cars been registered its now a one owner car.

It's sucks put imagine this scenario

2 cars on a lot that are identical

1) new, never owned with 250 miles
2) used, one owner for 2 weeks with 75 miles

Same car...which do you think costs more and easier for the dealer to sell? I'd say option 1

50k was fair. It's a buyers market for zl1's, seems people are trading them in for the c7.

FYI....I think a few guys have picked up left over new zl1's for right around 50 k

my only intention was to try to get people to band together so that the dealers do not have such power over us. Nothing else.

I have been in your position and I do understand how you feel.
THIS IS A CANADIAN EXAMPLE as I'm in Canada so the prices may not mesh with the US but you will see my point.

I bought a 2012 2SS vert 45th anniversary in December 2011. The sticker was 54K and I paid 46K(I did get a really good deal). I wanted a ZL1 and took it back to the dealer around March of 2013 (so I owned it for just over a year). I had under 3000miles on it as it was a garage queen. The highest offer I could get was 35K, the lowest was 27K. I sold it privately for 42K and did and in and out with the dealer to recoup all my taxes. So I was out 4 grand which is really good for owning a vehicle for a year. I attribute this to not maying MSRP.

Fast forward a few weeks after I sold my car I saw a 2012 45th vert at a dealer and they wanted 45K, just out of curiosity I asked them how much they would move. They gave me a big song and dance about being rare etc etc etc, what I did not tell the dealer is he was one of the ones I tried shopping my car to and he offered in the 30's.

My point is there are people that will appreciate and buy your car. The dealers don't care about how rare a car is or how cool are car is unless its one they are the ones selling it, if its one they are buying they will say it does not mean much. Take a look at the wholesale values of options on a car and you will see. They are in the business to make money and flip cars as fast as they can. They are not evil, they are just in the business to make money.

Be reasonable as you are not going to make money, put it on the Autotrader and sell it privately, will have to drop a few K but you will find a buyer. Spring is in a few months so don't panic and give it away.

You could always try to advertise it in Canada, there is a shortage of them here and dealers here still don't want to go below MSRP on a ZL1. Up here we see so many US cars.

Just my 2 cents

nice write up V8. I truly am not all that interested in selling my car. I was just appaulled at the dealers practices. I agree with you completely about what and who the dealers are and what they are trying to do. MY hopes is just that owners would band together causing the dealers to treat us better. Its like owning a stock, if you are willing to just dump it then the stock will bring nothing. Dealers know that if we trust them, they will hit a home run off us.
