Hey guys, Newb here: Mopar guy thinking about purchasing a Camaro!

Hello all!
I'm a mopar guy, owner of a black on black 2012 Charger, and while I love my car and Mopars, I'm very interested in a new Camaro SS. Honestly, my v6 is cool, but I need that rumble of a v8 in my life! While searching dealer inventories online looking for my next Mopar, a Challenger RT, I couldn't help but notice that Camaro SS's were in the same price range. That got me to paying closer attention and looking more and more at Camaro's! My research of Camaro's brought me to this site, which I see is very active, insightful, and helpful. So, I come to you guys in peace and might I probe your mind for some information.

Obviously, I know that the SS is the v8 trim of the Camara, as well as the ZL1 but there's no way I can afford that right now. I keep seeing on here things such as 2SS and SS/RS, etc. What does that mean? Can anyone provide me to a link where they break down each package and differences in standard features between each.

All I know, is that whichever car I get, it will have to have a v8, heated leather seats, and sunroof, and if I purchase a Camaro, the hid and halos. Which Camaro package should include those features?

Also, how hard would it be to change the head unit out on the Camaro? I know on my Charger, it's connected to the HVAC controls, making it impossible to remove the factory head unit. Although, on Challengers, it's not tied into the HVAC unit. What about Camaro's? If so, has a kit been developed to allow aftermarket head units?

I've narrowed down my next vehicle to either a 2011+ RT Challenger, and a 5th Gen Camaro SS, preferably 2011 up as well. Right now, the Challenger is in the lead, mainly because of the retro styling, the push button start(my charger has spoiled me lol), and the fact that I have more knowledge of it than the Camaro. Also, at 6'2, 230 with long legs, I know I fit comfortably in the challenger, and I've never rode inside a Camaro, so no idea of fitment there.

But, I want to make the best decision, and not look back and have regrets later. I know that dollar for dollar, based on speed and performance, the Camaro is a better buy. But how many times I'll run her at the track, or even play with other cars on the interstate is minimum at best. With my 70 hour a week work schedule, either car will just be my Sunday toy lol.

I'm not here to troll or anything. Just looking for information.

You'll want a 2SS/RS if you want the options you mentioned. It has HUD, heated seats, etc. My fiance has a 2008 Charger R/T and I have a 1SS/RS so we love our V8s!!! His Charger has a lot more luxury then my SS but performance wise, not even the same ballpark. Before I bought my Camaro I was debating a Mustang and Challenger. One test drive in the Camaro and I was sold. Go drive one, itll help make your decision pretty clear

Edited to add: my fiance is 6'4 240 lbs and has no problem driving my Camaro. I even let my 6'9 300lb bbrother drive it. He was a bit more scrunched but still able to drive comfortably and I have a sunroof which shrinks the height an inch. My Camaro is a weekend toy as well, love it. Wouldn't change it for anything.

Here's our babies

To start off, Welcome to C5!
To answer some of your questions:

The Camaro comes in 4 "Models"
LS
LT
SS
ZL1

Then those are broken down into
1LS (Base only comes in manual)
2LS (Base, but I believe you can get the auto)
1LT (just a step above 2LS, different rims and maybe a few other interior things. Cloth seats, and door panels)
2LT (Top of the line V6 leather, heated seats, etc.)
1SS (same as 1LT, but it has the V8)
2SS (Same as the 2LT, but with the V8)
Top Top of the line would be the ZL1 (Supercharged V8)

On top of the LT and SS you can add the RS appearance package. (HID's, Halos, 20" rims, different tail lights)

You can also get a SS/1LE, which has different suspension, and other performance mods

There's also the convertible option on the 2LT/2SS/ZL1
(Here's the link to the wiki that will pretty much answer any questions you may have about the different options available on each model.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/wiki.p...e=CAMARO+WIKI&

You might also go to Chevy.com and build one, that will show you all the options available.

For the features you listed you would be in the market for a 2SS/RS, but I'd go with 2SS/RS/1LE, I believe they started these in 2012? Since you said you don't track much this might not be for you, but everyone that has one says they are the best (Other than the ZL1) (That I've talked to)

Yes the head unit is combined with the HVAC, but there are kits that make it changeable.

I would just test drive a couple and see what you like the best.

Best wishes in your search!

I had a 2012 Challenger SRT8 and sold it for a 2013 Camaro and haven't looked back. I too was a MOPAR guy but no longer. Get the Camaro.

It might be a little to tight for you since you're 6'2...I would suggest that you check it out first and drive it around...see how it goes. If you want a v8, go for the 2SS...if you have more breads to burn, go for the ZL1.

Since you are relatively tall, be sure and adjust the seat height when you test drive it. The forst time i drove one (im a mere 5'7") i thought it was awful because the dash was so high (to me). Little did i know, the seat adjusted up and down and it was all the way down at the time.

I too was gonna warn of the height, my father about cracks his head each time he gets in and out of my car and basically is touching the roof. just something you have to remember each time getting in and out as the challenger has a much longer door and space for that.
RT is gonna be slower due to weight, but more spacious. Something to else to think of is mopar loyalty rebate should be an option since you have one as it wont exist if you switch to SS.
