Our Chief Engineer (Al Oppenheiser) and our Powertrain Engineers all agree: You should follow the Break-in period as we describe it.

I've mentioned this in several threads and some have questioned our wisdom. They, however, did not engineer this particular car or powertrain. Let me assure you that we don't make this up just to see what happens.

Strongly suggest you stop - I think you used the words "beating on it" - and finish out the break-in period as we describe.

One person did mention what we do at the proving ground - and they would be correct -- the idea is to abuse to failure -- and then search for root-cause.

PAY ATTENTION!

If you were to open the owner's manual of most GM (and other manufacturers' owners manuals...) you would see that the recommended break-in period is usually 500 miles.

MAKE NO MISTAKE.....we did not 'dream up' a 1,500 mile break-in period 'just for the fun of it'.

We did not sit in a meeting and say "I know! LET'S TELL 'EM 1,500 MILES!!!" followed by snickers and laughs and guffaws.

We are telling you that you need to follow a 1,500 mile break-in period because we know that it's necessary.

Consider that the ZL1 has nearly 40% of it's parts as unique to the model.

This is no 'run of the mill' automobile. It has very sophisticated components and materials

(....and forgive me for shouting - but I have concerns that people who are not even in the auto industry giving out 'sage' advice when they shouldn't be...)

THE BREAK-IN PERIOD FOR A ZL1 IS 1,500 MILES.

Not 1,000 miles......

-- not 500 miles..........

-- not 200 miles........

The Break-In period is 1,500 miles!

now - is there someone here that does NOT understand what I just said?

I'm sorry to be rather rash - but I've addressed this issue several times over the past year or so - and it bothers me when someone decides to give others advice when they're not in the position to be giving good advice with the proper facts.

Please forgive my outburst -

1500 mile break in is retarded. drive it for 250-500 normal. heat cycle all the gears a few times.

then just drive the car. I feel like anyone who says much difference does not do any mechanic work what so ever. there is nothing on the car that intependally that requires that milage other than a global corparate policy they enacted in 2009.

tranny is 500 miles seperate. LSA crate does not require it. rear gears don't require it. etc etc.

look it up. LS3 in 2008 500mile break in. LS3 in 2009 1500 mile break in. hmmmm food for thought. now the LSA hit in 2009 so it just started out with the global waranty.

one think you will not find in all the theards on this subject is any mechanical reason for it. period. I challange one person to find a comment from anyone even from GM that say component XYZ need 1500 miles to break in.
