I have learned in Charleston that you shouldn't go below 1/4 tank. I almost ran out of gas driving home from work. It took me 3 1/2 hours to drive 13 miles.

I'm lucky with my work schedule that I rarely run into bad traffic. There are gas stations just about everywhere around here too.

I couldn't get off the 1-26. You would think there was a hurricane coming with everyone headed inland. NOPE JUST SOME RAIN!!!

Well?
What did the range say when it stopped running?
How much fuel to fill it?

It's a hell of a lot better than the fuel gauge on my 69 Camaro and 69 Impala where it was just a vague suggestion of how much fuel might be in the tank. (although on the Impala I could just check the draft line as she rose out of the water)

Low fuel warming came on at around 40 miles range.

There is no other warning of fuel levels before your run completely out.

Well, there is one other warning- the gas gauge

I ran out of gas once. In 1989. Pushing my car to the pump was an important lesson.

You're saying running out of gas stops the car?

Bullshit.

I am with you. I run it down to the warning or very close to it before I fill up. Where I live traffic is not an issue, and I only have a 10 mile run to work and plenty of stations. When I lived up north, you learned to never let a tank get to low because of weather problems. Why would someone let there car get low on fuel or run out some of you have asked? It's called life, and it often gets in the way of the best laid plans!

This has been pretty much the standard advice ever since fuel injection came to be the norm (what... 25+ years now). Pretty simple to avoid, actually - when you get to 1/4 tank, stop and gas up. You don't save any money overall by running the tank down low. In fact, it can cost you (much) more in the long run.

I had an 86 Escort I ran out of gas in twice... About half way in my 40 mile commute... Problem was I ran out in the same place both times... The farmer I got gas from the FIRST time called the cops on me the SECOND time

Really? If it gave you the "miles 'til empty" you would run it until it was down to zero and then probably run out anyway, much more often. When the "low fuel" warning comes on, STOP FOR GAS at the first opportunity - even if you just get $5 worth (to hold you until you find gas for 3 cents less per gallon).

My DIC has a 'fuel range' setting. He must be joking.

First thing first, it's no ones business to tell you when to fill up.

I've ran out of gas 3 times in my SS Camaro, one was on the side of the freeway in the carpool lane. Nothing happened, no check engine light or anything, no issues to this day. and guess what? I fill up about 30 miles after the 'low fuel' light comes on just because like you, i know there is 2 gallons left and i avg about 15 mpg.

I do fill up each time i go to the pump, and i run it as dry as possible each time as well.

I then log each one and track the gas stations. NOT because I care what my MPG's are, but just to see which gas station gives the best mileage to its cost over all, to find out what the prices are today vs today last year, just to record them for statistical purposes.

I have every gas receipt since the car left the lot new w/ the mileage written on the receipt of each.

We all have our tweeks with gas / driving. Good story, hopefully it will answer somone elses issues if it ever arises for them.

What fuel range setting does yours have? I actually wish my DIC would give me the mileage to empty also instead of just having the 'low fuel' come up.

I don't always use the DIC for mileage calc, but when i do, its helpful to know what it estimates based off my most current driving..
