What's up with carbon fiber?

What's up with everyone wanting carbon fiber hoods and why do people not color match their vehicle. I see great looking cars with carbon fiber hoods and it looks crazy. I know everyone is going to say different strokes, but is there another reason? Are they lighter, stronger, heat resistant, or is it just "cool" to have a carbon fiber hood? Just something that has been bugging the crap outta me.

PS I don't mean this to offend anyone I'm just curious. Thanx!!!!

I don't think there is a real big weight difference between a stock hood and an aftermarket carbon fiber hood. I actually think the stock hood is a little bit lighter. (Someone can correct me if I'm misinformed). I guess it's more of a cool factor and a preference.

Cosmetic mods tastes/change over time. Right now CF hoods (may be lighter than factory), blacking out everything including wheels, and de-badging seem popular with the masses right now....but none are my cup of tea.

It seems older old school guys don't get into it.
But many of us younger guys like the contrast and CF is just plain cool.
To me it's no different than the Matte Blk hoods and spoilers GM sends out from the factory.

I think its mostly looks...most cf hoods ive owned were fiberglass skinned in cf...dont think itd be much weight difference unless it was cf only...i could be wrong though...lol

Most do it for looks but real Carbon Fiber is exceptionally strong and much lighter than most of the other materials hoods are made of.

The CF hood is about 2lbs lighter than stock since stock is aluminum already.

But yeah I like carbon for the weight (my hood isn't but my trunk is) but I paint match my carbon. I only like exposed carbon on a white vehicle.

All depends on the person but not saving much weight on the hood. Trunk about 20lbs saved though so good reduction right there

I guess I just like consistancy. A black hood on a silver car looks stupid IMO

I'm not a big fan of an all black hood whether is carbon fiber or even the 1LE but thats just me. I like it on other cars but not the Camaros.

carbon fiber is extremely strong. and on most cars, a lot lighter than stock hoods. CF is also lighter than aluminum, but not by a lot. Carbon fiber is also more durable. a rock could bounce off an aluminum hood, and you'd get a dent. Carbon fiber, it'd bounce right back.
