I'm happy to report no CEL's as well!

After about 40miles and several drives, there's also no leak, drone, rasp, or "rice"!
Just deeper, slightly louder, and definitely lower tone .

Butt dyno also registers a big jump in low to mid-range punch!!

Very cool.

With all your mods and your 3.73s you have one very quick V6 there!

The JBA shorty headers that I purchased (but have not yet installed) specifically state that you have to cut the pipe to the cats and weld them in....same with the headers they currently list on the JBA site.....are you saying you were able to buy a set the were strictly bolt-on.....I been thinking of going with the BBK LT w/ HFCs for just this reason.

Perhaps they've changed the design (leaks were common), but when I got my JBA short's about 2yrs ago the end of the header had a flat flange. You had to cut down the catted midpipe and weld on a matching flange to the front end.

The midpipe and short header were then held together with a V-clamp. See post #81 this thread. Doug Thorley's short header is similar, but they just weld up to the shortened midpipe- perhaps JBA has decided that's the best way to go if you're not gonna provide a traditional "bolt together" flange like they do for their V8 headers.

That's what I thought. That's why this was confusing:

The Solo's can't just "bolt up"

That's correct- the Solo's only bolt up to the stock exhaust manifolds. But they do that very well and don't cause a CEL, so they can provide a very convenient alternative to headers. This is how they were designed to be used and how they are marketed.

With short headers, you have to cut 8-9" off the catted midpipe and do some welding. And just FYI- with the Solo HFC's in that configuration, you also lose about 1" of ground clearance.

I purchased Pacesetter long tube headers and midtube pipes with high flow metal core
cats not ceramic core cats. The key here is metalcore cats, they work without setting off check engine lights. Ive had them on my car for around 1000 miles and no check engine light. Solo's cats are metal core thats why they are not setting off check engine lights.
You will get more horse power from long tube headers than from shorties, about 15 more.

I was reading everyones post and i think someone was considering this and i hink its a good idea.
couldnt i just buy two metel core universal high flow cats and have a shop put them in place of the upper cats and just cut off the two lower cats and replace them with pipe? technically it would work just as well as the solo high flows and the money spent should be cut in half. a plus to this is that if you add shorty headers itll bolt right up because its still using the same flange. to combat the rasp from this setup i would get the magnaflow res'd x pipe and the exhaust note should turn out pretty good. i thinnk im going to try this and see what happens, even though i still have a stock exhaust but oh well.

Yes you could definitely do this but most have never tried it because they want something easy that'll just bolt on. This is basically what I'm going to be doing with my long tubes. I found pacesetter headers for $60 and someone sold me BBK high flow cats for $50. I'm getting the cats welded on a pipe that I'll then weld onto the headers. Easy as pie and I'll have headers with high flow cats for under $150 when it's all said and done.
