There is a reason they make both. It's like a color, one is no better than the other, it's what you like. Enjoy your cars and be safe.

Just sold two 2012 Malibu's and bought two 2014 Malibu's for every day driving. Wouldn't have bought them with sticks if I could, but love the 6 speed in the ZL1

I frequent a local road racing track and on occasion will pay for driving instruction from a professional race driver in my ZL1 and the 2 pros that have been in my car have said, "holy crap, this thing is a racecar". With a few intelligent modifications, the ZL1 will run with just about anything wearing a license plate.
Neither the Corvette nor the ZL1 is truly a race car even though they may have near-race car levels of performance. They're just a bit too civilized, and too luxurious inside.

But with all that power you've got and even on only entry-level R-comps I'm not surprised at the reactions you got.

Skateboard? Like this little thing that's still street legal?

I've ridden in it at autocross . . . and I absolutely believe the guy about getting held up by most everything else on track going through the technical sections at NJMP (he and another Caterham owner have been know to beep horns at "slow" Porsches)

The Camaro series is absolutely (in certain forms) a race car... Check our any of the American LeMans series cars (not the LMPs) and you will see Corvette, Viper, Camaro (was GTO once), Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lotus, BMW. Once Ford gets their Mustang with an IR suspension dialed in, we will see those also... but for now the American muscle is Corvette and Viper on the track. All very well able to handle the track. Thinks like the Super7s and such are purpose built AutoX cars and you are not going to see them in the "big car" track series. Sure they will spank anything on the AX course. It is rare you ever see someone at an AX that is not taking 1st place, why, because is is purpose built for that occasion. After reading the lightning lap for 2013, and seeing the other cars in the list... the ZL1 did amazing, we just have an extremely small number our there using them on the road courses. (I think the z/28 will up that quite a bit, as it is not a 1/4mile car and also built for the track). If you look at all the mods on the ZL1, big brakes, cooling all over the place, all HD items.. that is no biggie on 1/4mile track BUT for prolonged use on a road-course then it makes sense. The natural "freebie" with the ZL1 is the engine, slap some drag rubber on there and you have an immediate 1/4mile track weapon.

One humble opinion.

Yes, you can make a real race car out of the ZL1, Z/28, 1LE, SS, or most any car, but it won't be one as it comes off the production line. The version you buy through your dealership would get its clock cleaned by a reasonably well prepared and sorted race version, even without the real race tires.

FWIW, the Caterham R500 Superlight - a slightly hotter version than the one in my picture - is a 7:55 car at the 'Ring. Not as fast as the Camaros that we have data for, but not too shabby for a car with all the exquisite aerodynamics of a barn door and 300 less HP than a ZL1 either.

Well, in my opinion, if you want a car you can drive off the lot, drive to a racing venue, maybe even a couple hundred miles away, race all day and then drive home. There are not many options out there that are better than a ZL1, especially if you like to try different types of racing... drag racing, road racing, autocross, land speed events, you will not be embarrassed if you show up in a ZL1...anywhere...and talk about easy to mod. The ZL1 is just plain a great car, especially if you have the neuro-muscular mapping in the precentral gyrus and cerebellum to co-contract left lower extremity extensors in conjunction with right upper extremity synergy patterns based on afferent feedback related to engine rpm.

There is no doubt in my mind that the ZL1 would fare quite well in an all-stock automotive pentathlon. None at all. Yours, on the other hand, really is a lot closer to "race car" and could probably beat a completely stock ZL1 at most any kind of racing event without ever using any of the odd-numbered gears.

You forgot Lombard's Paradox, brah. Antagonist co-contraction-without it you'd kick the underside of the dash.

I dont get the hate either, to each their own.....their money and their cars so why waste effort hating. That being said I also dont get why people would want to own an automatic sports/muscle car. In my own view a sports/muscle car and manual transmission go hand in hand. It's the complete experience including rowing through the gears I want from my sports car, and if I want an automatic to cruise in it will be a luxury sedan. Whatever makes you happy is what you should do....still a somewhat free country.

From what I can tell it is essentially the same performance, if anyone could tell me why people dislike the autos please leave a post!
