Blakout,

You seem like a very responsible person. First I will address a few questions you have. The first is permanent duty station, it will usually take about a year since you will have boot camp and MOS schools to attend.

What worked for me was to send an allotment to a bank at home so that I could not easily touch the money, trust me there will be plent of opportunities to spend money especially if you are overseas.

Do some research on retirement, I am currently a Gov't employee and have been for 22 years and Thrift is a good thing, anytime someone gives you free money for investing it's a good idea. Need to think about life insurance, it only gets more expensive as you get older. Get a whole life policy that generates cash. When I was 19 I got a 250 k policy, pay 29.00 a month. If I got that same policy today it would be about 105.00 a month, something to think about.

It is always better to pay for something than be in debt.

Thanks for the compliment. I like to consider myself one of the better tasting, riper apples of the bunch of my generation, but bragging about it would contradict that. Sending most of my income to a savings account not easily tampered with was one of my first thoughts when I decided to save up for a large purchase such as this. Also, the idea to save for two full years wasn't just so that I would have enough money to pay the entire price of the car, but also to give myself enough time in the USAF to settle into a more permanent location.

I can't wait too long to get a car because I don't have a car at all right now. Long story. I had a 2000 Cougar but after I moved out of the parents' house, and moved back in a year later, that car kind of turned into my mom's instead of mine. When I leave for the USAF I'm not taking my (or my mom's now) Cougar with me. Kind of sucks.

I had another question in my last post but I don't think you said anything about it, if you did, my apologies. Is the Thrift plan limited to only 10% of your total paycheck or can you put more into it?

By the way, you never told me what your MOS is?

Sorry, TSP will only let you put up to 10%. As for my AFSC, I'm a 2A773, AKA Aircraft Structural Maintenance. As for you, what job are you going into or are they getting you on an Open General?

I do not know if it is different for the military since that option was not available in 87, but now I am allowed to put 15900.00 a year in thrift, the IRS limit, since I am a Gov't employee

Hmm...interesting. Interesting indeed. I don't remember my exact AFSC off the top of my head right now, but I'm going in for Computer Systems Operations (soon to be called Cyber Systems Operations). I wanted to try and become a pilot, but I don't have a degree and I don't know how else I'm going to get into Officer school without one. Can't be a pilot without being an Officer first. Oh well.

On a side note, I think I've got my colors figured out for my car. No more Black. I've converted to IOM-ism.

Yes.

Ok. But they won't be selling 40 thousand of these things in two months by then.

Yeah, I've tried researching it but, like the previous poster who mentioned it, I couldn't find information on it either.
