What Would You Do?

so i was driving home last night on the freeway and a semi truck carrying rocks lost control of his truck and jack knifed in front of me and spilled rocks on the freeway....i dodged most of them and luckily i did not get any damage to body of the car...but i ran over a good sized rock and it cut my drivers side tire...i have 16,500 miles on the car which still have the stock tires..from what i have read here these tires are not very good on tread life

so my question is should i get 2 new front tires and if so which ones would you recommend?

or should i get 1 used tire and wait to replace both of them at a later time?

Demand that the trucking company give you 4 new tires. Argue that they are a staggered and matched set, and you are clearly not to blame. You could even probably get a lawyer to draft up a letter for significantly less than what it would cost to purchase, mount and balnce 4 new PZeros.

^^agreed^^

$1,000 for a set of tires is nothing compared to say, damage to your hood, or front end needing a repaint!

Wow! Truck's load causes damage to ONE tire with over 16k miles on it and he is owed 4 new ones? Also no mention if the cut was cosmetic or structural.
Did the damage get noted on a police report? No= good luck.

If it is on a police report and the tire is not usable or safe to use, at best is one new like tire. And should only be the cost minus % of used tread. (75% of tread remaining from original usable tread depth, then they pay 75% of the cost of one tire.
As far as what to do for a replacement tire, I don't like mis-matched tires. What I would do would be based on how worn the tires are, budget, and availability of a good used matching tire, if I would just replace the one or both front tires or all 4.

You can rant and demand all you want, but their only liability is to replace or repair what was damaged.
And even then you have to have proof their truck caused the damage, which does seem to be the case here.
Note: If their truck ran over something on the roadway and kicked it up into your vehicle, they would not be liable for that damage.
It has to have come off of their truck.

Well, you have to start high, then you settle somewhere in the middle.

to have any chance at getting reimbursed, I think you'd need to have a tire shop look at it and document the damage ASAP. also have them document tread depth. If they could say something like "tires need to be replaced in pairs", that would help.

then you could always go to small claims court. I think the most you'll ever get is cost for 1 or 2 new tires.

Bearer of bad news, the trucking company will say prove this happend at that time and at that incident. Without a police report or stopping at the scene at the time it happened there is no proof. I hope it works out for you and you do get the tire replaced.

Good luck. You might get a (one) new tire out of it IF you have a police report of your damage. Hard to believe there was no damage (chips, etc.) to the paint. I assume you have checked the lower part of the front splitter/grille, the rear defuser, gills, and lower rockers.

Oh sh*t. You didn't stop? You're out the total cost of damages. Sorry, man. Tough break.

Do you even know the name of the trucking company? If so I would call and ask if they will replace the damaged tire (not all four) out of the goodness of their hearts. If not, replace it yourself and move on.

People always talk about replacing tires in pairs or sets, but it's a waste of money. If you feel the tires are worn enough that a new tire could cause an issue, then just have the new tire shaved down to match the old tires. It should only cost about $25 which is a heck of a lot less than replacing 3 perfectly good tires.
