[QUOTE=Zeus;746838]Exactly. But if you pull into a supermarket next to a camaro infront of the general public they will see two things:
The hottest car you can (barely) buy right now. And an overpriced mustang. eh...i'm willing to bet we all spend a little too much on our cars in the first place. although i agree that the camaro is the hotter car right now, i have to disagree with that being a deciding factor when choosing one or the other...gt500 owners are just as set on their car as we are on the camaro. if someone has deep enough pockets and wants a gt500 who are we to say they're paying too much? it's not like ford just stuck some snakes on the car and said "there...it's finished, what do you think?" to the guys arguing about putting a gt500 up against a hennessey/lingenfelter...if your having trouble concluding which price to use, just use the lingenfelter pricing. i think you get a comparable package for around $11k...still rather pointless to compare an aftermarket tuner's car to a factory car because it goes both ways. just enjoy your cars and stop acting like everybody is living in the fast and the furious...flame away |

It makes more sense to compare two supercharged cars than it does to compare a 32K normally aspirated car to a 50K supercharged car. Its funny I check on this site like twice a month and every time there is a new conversation about SS VS GT 500. Doesn't make sense to me.

I doubt most enthusiasts care what the general public milling around a supermarket think, nor do I. If that is a decision criteria for you, that is a bit sad. Both cars garner attention is the point I was making, vs. the below...

I said no one outside of enthusiasts/ car people care about the GT500. Then you proceeded to inform me about the enthusiasts interest in the GT500. Not sure what your arguing. The General public is gaga over the new camaro and as great as the 2010 GT500 is, doesn't give two shits about it. Thats all ive ever said. If you "Dont care" about what the general public thinks, thats super. But save both of us some time and keep that to yourself without starting a redundant argument. |

For some unknown reason, self abuse perhaps, I read all 11 pages of this monster. Of this I have some learned some things. (Please don't flame me if I get something wrong, this is only my opinion)
1. The GT500 is a monster of a car. 2. The SS is a great car. 3. Half a second in a drag race is a big margin. 4. Ford vs Chevy. 5. Cars are priced different all over the country. If you are a Ford guy you will do everthing to show the good points of your vehicle. You will also do everything to point out the bad in the competiton. The same rules apply to the Chevy guys. It is simply a matter of personal taste. I am doing research on what new toy to buy as I recently sold my 70 GTO. I am leaning pretty heavy towards the Camaro, because my old man has a 69 ss396 and I was raised on chevy. (The new camaro would be the same color so we would have a matching set) The GT500 is awesome, but in Minnesota 50g's is a large kick in the head for a 7 to 8 month car. I would consider a new GT and then do some mods to it. (Like that s/c edelbrock has out now) My point is that the new GT500 is simply in a different class than the SS, in both performance and also in price. Any comparison between these two is simply meant to piss people off and stir the pot, no matter what camp your tent is pitched in. |

The ego thing he will just have to deal with on his own. No offense, but it sounds like your friend is more concerned with what others think of what he drives than he is owning a car that makes him happy. Chances are if you pull into a supermarket and the people are as car-ignorant as you suggest 1)The first question they would ask about the Camaro is what kind of car is it? and 2) They would have no idea what a GT500 is, let alone have any idea about its price-point. Even the general public that are not hardcore car enthusiast know the Shelby GT500. I was surprised at first to get comments every time I drive, along the lines of "that is one badd car.......etc. etc.".

Here is some fuel for the fire. Someone just posted his time with a 2010' GT500. Only mods were BMR upper and lower control arms to control wheelhop. No engine mods at all and stock tires. 11.6 @117.81mph. If this owner were to go with a stage 2 setup (CAI, 2.6 pulley,Tune) I would expect to see a high 10 second pass.
