K&N Air Intake ZL1 Gains

This may be old news, I caught one of the K&N commercials and it said horsepower gains guaranteed, check the website to see how much.

http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=63-3079

Okay, so it looks like they guarantee a gain, but don't guarantee how much. But, they estimate 31.71 hp increase. I can't tell if that's supposed to be with or without a tune.

I just thought it interesting and decided to share.

I'm not buying one, I went with Rotofab last year. Even if I had known about the K&N it would have been a difficult choice given that it's literally more than twice as expensive as the Rotofab.

I can't tell you what gains I specifically got off of the Rotofab. I didn't do a stock dyno. But dyno after install of it with no tune showed 515, I can't remember which kind of dyno it was. It was at Vengeance Racing in Georgia.

Side note, it's funny, K&N is based out of California and this product is not road legal there.

I think it may be one of the only ones made of real carbon fiber, hence the high price.

It would be great to get some responses from users. I would pay for real carbon fiber and just want to be sure it's worth it. If anyone has any experience let us know.

Well I don't think K&N is lying. I consider them to be a reputable company from other types of purchases in the past. I would say if you like the carbon fiber and want to pay for it then why not buy it.

But maybe someone who has purchased one can chime in.

I just bought the K&N kit off Amazon Overstock Auto for $629.99. I opened the box and everything appears to be top notch. Heat shield and intake tube is Carbon Fiber. Mass air meter housing/filter adapter for 6"(I think) is plastic. This is my first mod and weather is crappy here in the Midwest so it'll be awhile before I get to test mine out.

I run this CAI and it's nice piece; spendy buy nice. K&N published gains are pretty accurate except for torque; I saw about a 28 rwhp and 13 ft-lbs gain. No tune is required.

A little nicer here in the Omaha area so I kicked the heat on in the garage and went out and installed mine today. It went together really easy. Only thing I didn't like is having to heat the vacuum line going to intake tube. Other than that I love it! Blower wine sounds awesome and it looks at home in the engine bay. Now if it wouldn't have snowed last night I'd be taking her for a spin.

While I do believe that CAI systems improve airflow I have serious doubts about advertised gains.

Look at the time lapse between runs:

http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/63-3079_dyno.pdf

There was almost 5 hours of cool down time for the engine & supercharger.

Back in 2004 I put my 03 Cobra on the dyno just to see what it was making. The first two runs were back to back and the hp/tq numbers were very close. The shop owner asked if I was willing to wait and let it cool down so we could see if there was much of a difference when cold. After running a fan on it for about an hour and spraying the intercooler with water before the next run the car picked up about 30 horsepower over the first two runs. Very similar to what's going on here.

I'd like to see dyno runs with this and the roto fab unit back to back. Carbon fiber is more heat resistant, right?

i would pay attention to the IAT temps my K&N is terrible at keeping warmer air out infact my stock system did a better job at managing temps then the current system i have now the only reason i keep it is because its less restrictive. ill have my CAI inc system soon its a completely enclosed system and comes with a race scoop for an extra few dollars. they HP gains are good and its a good investment for a cheap mod but i would go with an enclosed system and a race scoop IMO
