Hi All,
I have a few questions. I have read this whole thread and have some questions regarding the installation. 1. Those with issues did you install the on-star module with your original installation? 2. What is the revision code which resolves the battery draining issues? I'm unable to locate it anywhere. 3. Anyone with no problems can you provide a photo of how you placed the wiring? It seems like the problems are wire related. As many of those that removed the unit after several trys have had the unit start many of the reported issues. Could it be the connector to the back of the HVAC unit? I'm inspecting the harness closer on this as it seems like there maybe a common trend with it. 4. Those that have removed the unit a few times. Did you kill the power and re-perform the install steps that Scosche lists in the manual? Seems like they are confessing that there's some issues with the connector if you don't allow it to be plugged in after the power is off. Perhaps this causes an electrical short to the unit after that the unit performs erratically. I am going to install this unit, but I'm going to do it with the power completely off. The manual indicates that you have to wait until the power is off anyway. I'm also going to add the On-star module as this puts the car back into it's original equipment mode. I will document this install to see if there's any difference than those that followed the manual. I'm having a hard time believing that Scosche can't replicate these problems. Considering that there are no other options available to replace the radio outside of that ugly Metra kit... there has to be a resolution for all these erratic electrical problems. I really think that GM should build a factory radio replacement kit for the Camaro. It was a dumbass idea to build the HVAC in with the radio anyway. Cost savings could have been from devising a better way to allow consumers other options like they have in the past. No one likes the factory radio options... they have always been very poor. Every car I have had I have replaced the speakers and the radio. Car manufacturers don't understand sound... so why try now? The Boston package that came with this car is absolutely horrid. I ripped them out and replaced them all with rockford fosgates. Last edited by dnkygirl; 02-16-2014 at 02:50 PM. |

I also had a professional radio installation shop do my install. They even got on the phone a few times with Scoche to address an issue with their earlier installation instructions that affected the steering wheel controls.

It looks like they are redesigning the on-star module, perhaps this was another part of the issue. I can't find a single on-star module anywhere... I'm wondering if I could use the Alpine module as it is the very same module except with a black casing. Very pricy part just because it has the Alpine name on it...

New install experience
I completed my self install of the gm5201ab kit. I have tested distance with my remote and am not experiencing any issues. There are a few things I did notice during installation that could cause issues.
1. The top small cable connector contains all the power for the display. If installed incorrectly it could surge the unit which could cause sporatic electrical issues. Also this connector has too much play, they need to look at a different connector which won't rock around and develop a short. I noticed the play when I disconnected the first time to correct the seat heaters. 2. The recommended time to wait to plug in the kit is wrong. I waited until all lights in the car turned off which was 7 to 8 mins. I had the car in neutral I'm not sure if that extended the time but it wasn't 5 mins. 3. Fitment issues the top 3 metal brackets don't hold the unit well from the top. I'm looking for a way to correct this issue. 4. Sometimes you have to do the install twice if something doesn't function. My seat heaters were not working on the first go round. I waited until all power was off pulled the plug without the key in the ignition. Plugged it back in and power cycled the ignition twice then cranked. Now my heaters work. This kit is finicky. I went with a kenwood dnx 891 unit which works with all of the factory steer wheel controls. I won't be replacing onstar cause now I don't need it. The iPhone integration of this unit works flawlessly with the phone and hands free is perfect. |

I was looking at this unit as a potential replacement to the GM HVAC I like the idea of a touch screen and buttons rather than a bunch of knobs and buttons. I've read the entire thread and it seems that Scoche still has issues with this?
I wasn't going to replace the OEM touchscreen radio but I don't know if it would fit with this Scoche unit? (I noticed that every single one of you replaced your radios either before or after this kit). My reason for keeping the radio is because of the mylink/onstar/HUD; I understand that the HUD will not work without the OEM radio; but I still want to replace my HVAC component without changing the OEM unit. Too bad, the shop I go to for all my audio uses kenwood; too bad they could be doing us a favor by offering Camaro aftermarket. |

TBH I don't care about song scrolling on the HUD, I just wished the HUD was brighter when I wear my polarized sunglasses (its bright enough without them). Does Onstar work through the HUD without OEM radio? I want to get this kit but I can't see getting it when the product is severely crippled. |

The Scosche kit is specifically designed to work with an aftermarket replacement radio. It will NOT work with the factory MyLink radio. |

Maybe I will skip the Scosche kit since it has a bad reputation; and not only that the shop I go to is not a Scosche authorized dealer so that eliminates that problem too. My main thing is to get a radio that will work with Onstar and the backup camera & park assist sensors so long as it doesn't interfere with the HUD as pointed out before by someone else that it shouldn't. |

basically Onstar nav looks just like the one in the DIC/Speedo as you pointed out but its directly on the window/HUD although its smaller as they try to cram your speed & navigation in the same box which does not really allow for a whole lot of data to be displayed. One thing I like about the onstar nav being in the HUD is that when you approach a turn a red bar appears and gradually shrinks to indicate how close to the turn you are (this is also evident on the Mylink touchscreen but not a red bar; same idea a vertical bar shrinks as you near the turn. The guy at the car audio shop says his 2011 has the very first HUD and his doesn't work at all with 3rd party/non stock radio (I assume his WAS the mylink radio) which is why I was concerned that all the other components such as Onstar & HUD had functionality after MyLink was removed. I don't mind the Onstar module if Scosche requires it; but I really wish I could find out whether or not Scosche has fixed all their problems I saw a kit for $270 and I am not going to shell out money for something that doesn't work. |

Call me stupid but I just bought the AB model.
I was wondering if sealing the wiring connections at the back of the kit with sealant would help with potential shorting and maybe make the connections a little more durable. I found this sealant. |
