How do you make changes in the engine management?

Hello,
I know that if you fit certain parts to your car, like long tube headers, you require a re-tune of the engine management software. I have read that on these cars, making changes in the ECU is relatively simple. Does anyone have any experience of changing stuff in the ECU?
On a similar note, GM sells many performance enhancing parts, like the LS3 CNC-Ported heads and cam kit. Does GM also sell you or make available to you an engine re-tune, that you can play onto the ECU via some kind of tool? And is it possible to make a back-up of the original software, in case you want to refit you original parts?
Thanks in advance for any help!

HP Tuners, SCT, Diablo all have tuning suites for the LS3, ect. I prefer HP Tuners Pro with the ability to log an external wideband O2 (Lambda) sensor.

They all let you save your stock file.

Changes are easy to make BUT you need to learn what you are doing. It's a fairly steep learning curve that can total your engine.

If you want to learn tuning, enroll in a class or find a good mentor.
