Not sure if this is the right area to post this, but has anyone ever used one of the aftermarket HUD units? Some of them sell on amazon for less than 100, anyone have feed back?

Yeah, they are ok.
Depends on if they are OBD2 or GPS based. The gps based ones are a bit nicer, and you don't have to plug them in to your OBD2 port all the time. Downside is that you have to mount the reflective tint on your windshield, or have the whole windshield tinted. A really nice idea, but kind of gimmicky. The retrofit ones Ofer sells at Gen5diy are really nice and don't look like you have a 1990's pager on your dashboard.

On that note, has anyone ever ordered just the hud from GM, or taken it out of a scrapped car and put it into say a silverado? Ive been wanting to do this to my truck for a long time now, and now that the 2014s have a full color HUD I REALLY want to do it
