Custom rear seat delete...in progress!!!
I've been looking at rear seat delete kits and didn't see anything I really liked so I decided to make my own. I haven't finished/installed it yet for several reasons:
1) I'm still deciding if I like the ss emblem mounted on top, like in the pics or should I try it under the fabric. So for now, I just wrapped the emblem itself...which was still hard. I may just spray paint the emblem onto it, in red or white??? 2) I'm not 100% satisfied with the ss emblem. If you look closely, the first "s" on the emblem isn't perfectly squared like the second one. So I really need to redo the emblem. 3) I'm thinking about putting some dynamat on the back & seat portion to help muffle the exhaust & road noise. From what I 've read Dynamat is really lightweight now. As is, I doubt the entire thing(top& bottom) weighs 5lbs. I'll post up some more pics when it's done & installed. Now that I have a template and see how this spray adhesive & fabric work together I may do another using better/thicker wood. The stuff I used for this one was cheap, like $20 for both 24" x 48" sheets(Home Depot), $8 for spray adhesive, $5 for fabric from Walmart & another $20 for the jigsaw to do the emblem. While the main purpose is weight reduction I still want it to look good and hold up over time! If I'm not 100% satisfied, the seats are definitely going back in!!! |

Thanks! I'm not sure? It was on a roll that they measure & cut for you. It's not cotton? So I guess it's polyester? It's really soft, kinda stretchy. It's actually black, but is a closer match to my charcoal interior than the grey that they had.

Interesting. I'm suprised a vendor has not offered a similar kit in 2 or 3 colors.
As far as insulation goes, this was my first mod. I fully insulated my SS from the front seats back to the rear body panel. The Dynamat keeps my interior wisper quiet even with my aftermarket exhaust. |

If going with the SS emblem, I think a less pronounced emblem under the fabric would look better. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I did my car 3 years ago so I forget. I insulated the floors, w/hsgs, complete inner 1/4 pnls, etc.
2 boxes were both probably 16-18 lbs total. I think my muffler delete exhaust made it a wash. I don't care about weight as my SS was purchased for interstate travel not racing.

I was thinking the same thing. I' m just worried about it holding up over time if I go underneath? On top, I can reattach if it comes unglued, bubbles up, etc. from the heat. If I go underneath I'd have to redo the entire top piece...this spray on glue is really sticky stuff. It's tricky making the fabric stick to the letters though. Im gonna keep at it though. Should finish up this weekend.

Still haven't done the bottom part yet because I didn't have enough cloth material, so I just left the stocker in for now. The bottom part of stock seats doesn't weigh much anyways, plus I've gotten used to this look???
I was gonna finish it this weekend, but my headers showed up!Couldn't get any shots from another angle...sun was too bright!!! Maybe, I'll finish it one day!!! |

I just enlarged an ss image from google and cut it out. Then laid it on a piece of particle board, spray painted it and cut it out with a jigsaw.
I could have just as easily traced the image onto the particle board but figured the spray paint would be faster and more precise. The emblem is really hard to wrap with cloth & isn't "perfect" upon close inspection. So if you're showing I'd definitely wood glue it to the surface first, then cover it all with material. Instead of wrapping the emblem itself and gluing it on top like I did. |
