LS3 Downshift Throttle Delay
I was on the interstate last night, in the right lane, just cruising along (cruise control on) and minding my own business when an idiot in the left lane rolls up and then basically just sits there with their front tire about where my door is. Mind you, I am rolling along at about 80 while this is going on. Eventually, we come up on a truck in my lane so I have to slow down. 70, then 65, then 60, and the person on my left does the same thing, getting slower to match my speed. I quickly tire of this and decide to shoot the gap, this is where my question begins. I clutch it, throw it into 3rd, pin the throttle, release the clutch. Mind you, I have had this car for 2 years and Mario Andretti doesn't have sh&* on me as a driver (I may be overstating here by just a fraction) and this all happened within a second or so.
THIS FREAKING CAR ABOUT THREW ME THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD!!! The hesitation only lasted about half a second but it nearly required me to have the seat upholstery surgically removed from my anal cavity. Once it picked up the throttle, the wonderful LS3 did it's thing and I never saw those fools again. So, what is up with that hesitation? Is this normal? |

was your traction control or stabilitrac on? That will cause hesitation

That's your answer then, the engine will rob you of that power because it thinks the wheels are going to spin. That's why unless it's raining I shut off all nannies!

I switched out my stock TB with a V-MAXX ported TB last summer, easy mod, and made a noticeable difference in throttle response. maybe something to look into.

The engine does not rob power in anticipation of a loss of traction, it takes power away as a result of a loss of traction. In my opinion, and no offense to you and your abilities Mr. Andretti, but I think when the clutch came out, the RPM of the engine was still at the approx. 2000 RPM that is 80 mph in 6th gear. For an instant, you had massive engine braking going on. That all changed when the RPM caught up to the necessary point for 80 MPH in 3rd gear. The traction control grab, even in response to tire spin, I do not think would have felt that drastic.

I agree with gajagfan^^ to not have the problem is to help your synchro's out and press the clutch in, get the engine rev'd up to 3000-3500, put it in 3rd and let out! Then romp on er and it and will be a lot smoother and easier on your synchro's

same thing happen to me i was going 45 mph and there where 2 18 wheeler in front of me so i down shit in 2 with traction control on and the engine just stop and i literally almost hit my head on the steering wheel then a second lather the ls3 just kick in yo
but after that i fond out if you remove the traction control it wont happen it will go without a delay but when ever you will down shift it with tc on and it will hit a high rpm the engine will stop for a second

Oh, I see what you are talking about... yeah some quick heel-toe action is an easy fix.

Thats it! If you get used to rev matching on every down shift, it becomes second nature. To yowansavoie, I guess the traction control could respond to a wheel that loses traction by skidding as well as spinning, which may be what happens when the clutch comes out and there is massive engine braking due to no rev matching. Again, rev matching soles this all.

This is gonna sound like a shameless plug but, I switched out my stock pedals with SRP bolt on pedals, really improves heel-Toe action.

Also, 6 to 3 downshifts are just about the most fun you can have in this car as long as you do it right. With the "nannies" off you can end up sideways and spinning on the freeway if you're not at the right engine speed and have TC off. Be careful

I meant it was like when you are cornering and Heel-Toe shift, nott that you should actually Heel-Toe it.
