I only mentioned the toothpaste because I saw a video on it, but since I've never personally tried it, so I can't say how good it "really" works. Anyway, there's like a gazillion YouTube videos using Toothpaste. Sure you can go spend More Money, but I hope everybody already has toothpaste so five minutes of your time doesn't seem like a big deal. Here's a sample from YouTube.

I didn't watch the above video before posting, watched it after posting and was kinda disappointed. Not the best job/result, but he did only rub the toothpaste for a minute or so. Here's another one that I watched first, and it came out pretty decent.

Yes toothpaste will work, with enough time and effort. It will, without an excessive amount of time, not cut all of the oxidation out of the lens cover, so reoxidation will occur quickly.

I cleaned up my mothers BMW lenses with my PC using FG400 and M205 for the fine polishing. They weren't in horrible shape, but were crystal clear when I was done. Topped them off with some CG Jetseal. I'm sure the method from the OP works fantastically but everything I used, I already had on hand.
