Passing

This isn't really Camaro specific but I'm sure some of you get this all the time. I personally get it in the semi-truck I drive for work multiple times a day.

Why do a lot of people not like to get passed on the highway? Do they feel like a smaller person because of it or what?

I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. I come up beside them on their left going anywhere between 5 to 15 mph faster then them and they decide to speed up when either my front bumper reaches theirs or when they reach the middle of my trailer.

I'm sure their are many reasons why some people think they're better then others, but come on... why make me switch lanes if all you are going to do is speed up? I'm sure one reason is these damn phones everyone can't keep their hands off. They are texting or talking and realize a big @$% truck is coming beside them and they speed off.

I know sometimes I don't realize my speed has dropped a bit until someone goes to pass. Especially in the Ranger, that thing can't cruise worth a damn.

That is understandable if its only once in a while. I've had people do it to me multiple times before. I think I attempted to pass one individual about a dozen times before he finally got off the road.

I've also tested a theory a few times. If I go to pass someone and they speed up, I speed up with them. Most will continue to accelerate until I let off the throttle (or hit brakes if I'm going down a hill).

Just the other day in a heavy rain. I was in the right lane and a car was in the left. I started passing them (on the right) and they sped up. I accelerated with them to about 70 and they stayed. I bumped it up a little more and I guess the heavy rain finally scared them and they hit the brakes and slowed back to the speed they were going.

I know personally I will try to avoid being behind or next to a large vehicle (bus, semi, or other large truck) just due to the road debris they kick up. Or in the case of rain, the amount of water. But that goes both ways, I'll intentionally slow down to stay far enough behind one if I don't see a way to quickly pass.

I have noticed this as well although I don't drive a semi I do pull a travel trailer with my pickup and see the same thing. Even in the car I will see it I have my cruise control on and move over to pass then they speed up I move back to the right and catch up again and the cycle repeats. I figure it is people that don't have or don't want to use cruise control for some reason. I don't understand it either if you want to pass me on the highway go ahead as you obviously want to go faster than I do.

My other peeve is get out of the left lane if you are not passing someone. I hate people that cruise in the passing lane when there is no one in front of them in either lane.

So gtfo of my way and speed up lmao... Seriously though, I'm sure the majority of the people that do this probably couldn't care less about their cars. I have yet a Camaro, Mustang, or Challenger do this to me, then again... they usually go at least the speed limit if not faster!

I did a very long road trip recently, and there were a couple of times I missed the speed limit increasing (such as from 45 to 60). Since I use cruise control a lot, seeing a truck come up on me makes me double check the speed...and since the speed limit also usually shows on my Audi MMS (Google maps), it shows the speed limit there, and I adjust the speed.

I agree that there are people that don't want to be passed though...lots of times that happens with people that are driving in the left lane too.

You're being treated the way drivers have been trained by experience to treat you: the bad apples have made a bad impression for your whole group.

Unfortunately, pro truck drivers as a group are not the pros they once were, and some of that rep was never there anyway as during their heyday, they were on amphetamines sometimes and falsified logs a lot. Not trying to start a fight, just stating what I know. But you are paying for other drivers' sins.

Truck drivers are seen as dangerous by many. I know I am one of those people. I don't want you beside me or in front of me. At least in MA, they tailgate horribly, they bully other vehicles out of lanes, and they drive poorly. Frankly you folks scare me. I've seen many commercial trucks and rigs in accidents and right or wrong, you're seen as a potential hazard.

I get the same thing in my Camaro, people just dont want to be passed by one, especially little Japanese cars and Mustangs...
I have two pet peeves abut truck drivers. First is those that will pull out on the interstate beside another truck and they both slow down to 40 mph going up a hill. The second is when I pass a truck that is going up hill slowly and then top the hill they will run right up on my rear bumper before changing lanes, it's like they are trying to scare me or something... I always give them lots of space.

For your first pet peeve. (Not speaking for everyone) Slowing down going up a hill is not intentional. Sometimes drivers don't know how the next hill will pull (never been on it before) or the 4-wheeler or truck they were passing sped up so they couldn't pass him/her before the hill.
I'm not going to say I've never slowed traffic a little bit going up a hill, but guess what? I don't care about most 4-wheelers on the road due to them either driving distracted or view semi-trucks as slow pieces of crap that need to get off the highway. Granted, there are many out there that respect trucks and they get that respect back.

Your second pet peeve. Trucks are heavy, not all grades (hills) are created equal. Some flatten out towards the top causing the truck to gain back some of his cruising speed. Perhaps you should go the speed limit so that truck won't ride your bumper?

Personally I think most drivers are morons! I drive 50K+ miles a year (90% on the interstate). I'm a firm believer in using cruise control and usually set my speed at 5 MPH over the posted speed limit. On any given trip I will be overtaking someone on cruise control and they'll speed up and either pace with me or speed up and shoot ahead 10 to 20 car lengths. So I'll fall in behind them and within 2 to 3 miles I catch them - change lanes and usually they'll do the same thing over again!!! MORONS!!! I'm good at looking ahead and reading the traffic so I usually able to trap them behind a slower car and pass them. Once past them, they usually don't try to keep up.

Another thing that totally amazes me is that these same MORONS will run 70 MPH in a posted 55 MPH Work Zone but will not run 75 MPH in a posted 70 MPH Zone! Go Figure!!!
