Coil Over Set Up Question? Please Help

I recently installed a set of Pfadt Racing Feather Light Coil Over Shocks on my 2010 Camaro.

I got one of the last sets that were built, and had them assembled with the RED GMPP 450 lb. eibach springs so I could lower the car a FULL two inches.

After lowering the Camaro a FULL two inches, I now have only 1/2 in. of open shock rod from the shock body to the lower bump stop. I am concerned that the car may bottom out, and hit the bump stop to hard. The front shocks are not an issue, as I have PLENTY of open shock rod.

For those of you who have lowered your Camaro over 1 1/2 in. using Coil Over shocks, do you think I need to raise the car another 1/2 in. or so just to be safe?

I REALLY appreciate ANY and ALL feedback and advice.

Thanks In Advance,

Need pictures. My Pedders coil-overs are ride height adjustable, meaning that you do not use shorter springs to adjust ride height.I would expect Phats to be the same.

I don't suggest going lower than 1.5" in the rear as you'll run into CV issues. Given the motion ratio in the rear with 1/2" of exposed shaft will give you roughly 3/4" to 1" of compression travel getting into the bumpstop which means you can stiffen the damping or raise it up a 1/2". Those springs are relatively soft as well which is going to worsen the situation. Post up some pictures.

Kind regards,

What ride height are you at from ground to fender lip? Im assuming you have the spring collar all the way to the top. Like others said, some pics of the rear shocks will help.

2" drop is too much! You will hit the stops and like Jordan said you will mess up the CV joints if you drive agressively. Measure from the bottom lip of the wheel rim to the fender opening, it should be no more than 660mm (26") with 20" wheels.

edit: I meant to say no LESS than

Here are the pictures of the Camaro as requested. As you can see the car has been lowered a full two inches using the Pfadt Feather Light Coil Over shocks. As you can see, I only have approx. 1/2 inch of open shock rod.

The fender lip to floor dimension is only 27.00 inches due to the fact that I am using wheels and tires from a 2008 C-6 Corvette. I am using FORGED ALLOY pattern conversion adapters to convert the 120 mm. bolt circle of the Camaro to the 4.750 diameter bolt circle of the Corvette.

The OEM tire diameter of the Corvette tires are approx. THREE inches smaller that the OEM Camaro tires, which lowered the Camaro an additional 1 1/2 inches!

Please let me know how much open shock rod I need to have to be safe from bottoming out the shocks. I have already set the shock valving to the PERFORMANCE-TRACK DAY setting to firm up the shocks for compression and rebound.

Thaanks for ALL your help.

If those are OEM corvette tires, they are 285/35-19 and 26.8" tall which is a little less than 2 inches shorter than OEM. Pfadt recommends 29"-29.25" from ground to fender lip but since you are on short wheels, subtract half of the delta from 29". In your case (if those are OEM corvette tires) you shouldn't go any lower than 28". So I would say you should raise it about an inch.

If those aren't OEM corvette tires, and they really are 3" shorter than stock, then I wouldn't go any lower than 27.5"

Justin,

The rear tires are in fact 265/35/19 Pilot Super Sports mounted on 19 BY 10 INCH Corvette wheels. The fronts are 245/40/18 Pilot Super Sports mounted on Corvette 18 by 8.5 inch wheels. As I said before, I am at only 27.00 inches from the fender lip to the garage floor.

When you mount a 265/35/19 inch tire on the 10 inch wide Corvette wheel, the diameter of the tire is at only 26.00 inches. The FACTORY OEM Pirelli 245/50/19 inch tires that came on the car are 28.6 inches in diameter.

The difference in the mounted diameter of the two tires is actually 2.6 inches, or close to 2 5/8 inches.Believe it or not I actually LOWERED the factory ride height of the Camaro by 3.250 inches!

I have not driven the car at this ride height due to the fact that I may damage those EXPENSIVE coil over shocks.

It looks like I will have to raise the ride height of the car by at least .750 or 3/4 in. so I do not bottom out the shocks.

Thanks To ALL who have given their advise. I REALLY appreciate it!

All The Best,
