Oil Pan Rivets
There are 2 on the pan to help keep the gasket in place. Are these necessary and do they need to be re installed once I drill them out throw a new gasket in?
ETA: Also not that I have the motor out of the car and a new shortblock going in so this will all be done on a stand. Last edited by SERVED_USMC; 04-04-2014 at 07:11 PM. |

No need to reinstall them just put on the new gasket.

Make sure to square the back of the pan with the back of the block!

I reinstalled them when I replaced my gasket. I really don't know if they are necessary or not but it only takes a few minutes so I figured why not. What method did you use for dropping the pan? Did you pull the motor, remove front cradle, or did you modify the crossbar?

I broke a lifter so the motor had to come out. Pulled off everything from the heads up and pulled it out of the top. |

That sucks about the lifter. I re-engineered the cross brace to be removable to drop mine. I had to replace the pick up tube. Still have to lift the motor a bit (inch or two) but much easier for next time it needs a new gasket. It's pretty stupid they designed it like that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

On a 5th gen camaro we pull the intake, water pump and accessories off and pull the engine out and put it back in the same way.

Thats how I plan on putting it back in. It only took a little extra time to pull off the heads. Didnt know how tight it would be with them on.

We always re install the rivets back onto the oil pan just as it comes from the factory. It assures the pan gasket stays in proper alignment.
