2011 SS went BOOM and won't move. Makes terrible noises.

Pulling away from the stop sign in my 2011 SS camaro with on 6700 miles this afternoon. Let out the clutch to take off and something snaps and the car sits there and revs as if its in neutral.

The shifter will go into all the gears but once I give it gas and let the clutch out it rattles badly but doesn't move.

I was near my parents house so I rolled it to their house and it makes a thump thump noise when it rolls with the car off.

I crawled as far under there as I could and grabbed ahold of the axles. They felt solid. I couldn't get a look at the drive shaft. Right now thats sort of what I think could have snapped since the trans seems to shift fine. Also wondering if the diff could have broken.

Anyone else have this happen to them or any idea one what happened.

I called my insurance and they are supposed to be getting a tow truck out to me.

Sure am glad my mother convinced me to get a warranty on this thing.

P.S. Short of some exhaust cutouts, the car is stock.

Based on your description (engine revs-up, shifter goes into all gears but no motion) , looks like your clutch is done for.

But I can leave the clutch in and Rev it with out any problems. Its only when the clutch is out. And I wouldn't think the clutch being bad would make a thump thump noise when rolling the car around turned off. Right?

Any leaks? If there is a leak could be the clutch master cylinder has air in it and won't let you engage the clutch

Can you back up? Ie does reverse work? Does the trans go into all gears?

If you put the car in 5th and try to take off what happens?

If ithe engine doesn't die, your clutch or clutch plate is probably bad/broken or worst case you broke the transmission mainshaft.

I don't see any leaks. Any gear it just sits there and rattles if you let the clutch out and try to drive. The rattling increases with rpms.

You are correct, it is not the clutch. Broken clutch would not make any noise moving the car while it is not running. Look for one of the following; broken axle, differential, driveshaft (or driveshaft bolts), or broken trans mainshaft.

Good point, missed that statement.

I'd get it up on jack stands, if you can, and do a good visual inspection. See if you can spot any of the above, if you can turn the driveshaft or wheels once up in the air and what sounds or it feels like when you do.

Well I'll got it towed to the dealership last night and went and talked to them this morning. Just waiting to hear back about what they find. Should be covered under my warranty so I just took it to them without doing too much investigation myself. Hope its quick.

Sounds like a drive shaft failure.

Turns out it was the right rear axle that snapped. I just wasn't able to tell well enough when I crawled under there.

The dealership ordered one to be here in the morning and didn't ask me whether or not I would pay for it so I am assuming they are going to cover it under the warranty no questions asked.

I also talked to them about a 2nd gear grind issue. It will not shift into 2nd at high RPM's without doing everything perfect and slamming it in there. It grinds take crazy. I am hoping I can get them to replace the brass blocker rings with the updated carbon ones

Glad you got everything figured out. had I seen this earlier I would have told you to check your axles. I had some of those same symptoms once. The snap ring came off the axle end and I was stuck in the middle of the road...lol It sucked. I basically took it all apart, found the snap ring and put it back together.

Shout out to Carter Chevrolet in Shelby, NC. I snapped the axle on Sunday night. The gave it back to me on Tuesday at lunch. Only way they could have been any fast is if they had the axle already in stock. Completely covered under my warranty.

The tech said he believes wheel hop is what snapped it. He never questioned me about if I was doing anything crazy with it or not. Just diagnosed it and fixed it. I am very happy with how everything worked out

Oh no!

Sorry to hear about what happened SSRedTerror, but it's great to see that the dealer handled everything! Please keep us posted on vehicle's operation and don't hesitate to contact us privately if necessary moving forward.
