The Market tells how much something is worth. Economics 101. If they Build 500 and everyone sells for 75k it is worth 75k.
It is such a silly debate IMO.

If you had a time machine perhaps some cars would be worth the purchase price....
Is the money worth it....compared to what??....another car???....Maybe, but is the car it's compared to "worth it"?.... We all gotta drive cars, but they aren't going to make us wealthy.....Put a decent monthly car payment into a mutual fund over your lifetime....that will likely be worth it...lol... |

Absolutely right. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Believe me, there will be dealers asking more than $75K and guess what, someone will pay it.

We knew the $75,000 price included shipping and the gas guzzler tax, but the Chevrolet website now lists the actual Z/28 MRSP, clearly separating the other charges:
MSRP from $72,705 Destination Freight Charge $995 Gas Guzzler Tax $1,300 |

Not to be an azz, and while your post is well reasoned (to an extent), it strikes me as written by someone who has not spent a lot of time on road circuits. I say this b/c you minimize the braking and suspension modifications and focus on the motor. The motor swap from the 1LE is compelling (who doesn't want an LS7?) but the real magic is in the myriad of modifications to the unsprung mass, and secondly, downforce. In porsche terms the braking upgrade is 10k. I run Motons on my track car and these new dampers appear to be better than even the Motons. Tack on another 10k, easy! All the tuning that went into the suspension that can only be done after countless hours of R&D, and that development cost must be spread over the relatively low production run. Then we got sticky rubber, and forged wheels. Then all the wind tunnel work to get the front and rear to work together in terms of downforce, which then complicates suspension choice/tuning, and it becomes and expensive endeavor to design and build this car. So, coming from the Porsche and Ferrari world, I don't think the General priced this based on it's comparative performance with a Porsche Turbo or GT3. They priced it based on what it took to design and build the car. I have no problems with price. I do have a problem with the fact that it's a PIG, but fancy dampers have masked it's piggishness with, from all accounts, hamfisted body control. But it's all in how you look at it and what your background is.

***just guessing here,,,
72705 msrp -8 diff between ls3 and ls7 -7 diff between 1le brakes and z brakes -3 recaros upgrade -2 exhaust upgrade -2 tires upgrade -3 coolers and sump -2 differential upgrade -8 dssvs ? What is the r&d worth? Do the math. This "pig" seems priced more than fair. |

Relax, don't bust a vein. I wasn't attacking you personally, just taking issue with how you dissected the value proposition. Dragging my choice of cars and consequent means isn't terribly relevant. I judge the Z/28 based on what it brings to the table in terms of performance and overall appeal.
And I still think you are underestimating the parts cost on the dampers and brakes. For a fully engineered package with the suspension/brake/motor/wheel/tire/aero setup, the price is very competitive, although it will alienate many Camaro fans. However, the car is aimed at track rats. Since it's not uncommon to blow $2k/weekend at the track, most of the track crowd I know is pretty well heeled and the Camaro is built and targeted for this group.

Personally, if I were GM, I'd have made the Z28 an option code, not a unique model.
This way, they don't have to worry about risks of over-production. But, a $40k option code would freak a lot of people out. Let's break that down: Brakes - $15k Wheels/tires - $5k Aero package - $5k LS7 dry sump - $10k Shocks and suspension - $5k

I was coming back on to erase it but you already posted. I apologize, had a $hitty day and took out on here. My apologies.
"Absolutely right. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Believe me, there will be dealers asking more than $75K and guess what, someone will pay it." That is the bottom line really. It clearly worked, they sold them all and I have no doubts they'll sell the rest.
