DIY manifold porting
Hey there,
Annoyingly we don't have an experienced porting service in Oz for the LLT, was wondering if anyone has gone with a DIY approach. Any sort of feedback or advice will be greatly appreciated. Last edited by SV6GUY; 01-20-2014 at 11:46 PM. |

Yes but the MACE porting gets done in the US

Porting the inlet plenum not very hard to do, just time consuming and finding the right filler to smooth out. I matched the six intake ports only with the isolator spacer and got great results.

excuse the bump, but can anyone suggest how to fill in the dip at the manifolds mouth?

This is how I did it:
Buy this size box of JB weld (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JB-WELD-IN...-/250858214345) After you clean and dry your manifold you will have to prop the front up on something about 10 inches of so to keep the putty level when you put in into the sump or chin of the manifold. Mix the JB weld putty. Use a paint mixer to scoop the putty into the sump of your manifold. If you get the industrial size you will use all of it. You kind of want to use more than necessary. You are going to have to trim some off anyway and you want it to be one pour. One pour because you don't want any separations in the putty. In other words don't let the putty sit too long before you get all of it in. That will cause it to crack and break off after some time. Let it sit to dry overnight then have fun cleaning up. |

Take it to a weld shop and have them fill it in with filler rod. Don't trust that jb material. Hey its your valves

Since it's aluminum, welding may be cost prohibitive.
If the IM is not brand new, it may have oil residue even after thorough cleaning. Tracy (Rx Performance) claimed the aluminum was porous and he soaked the "dip" overnight with brake fluid as a solvent to eliminate all the oil. I dunno, I'm just passing it on. But if someone starting skipping this step to save time, it might explain our recent number of failures on professionally ported IM's. |

I'd be afraid of warping it if it was to be welded... That's a pretty big dip to fill up welding... I've got a metal forge on the way, so I can just pour molten aluminum into the areas that need to be filled.

Acid clean or cut the thing off and weld a plate. That is a good chunk of metal it you continuious weld (filler) yesit will wrap

I have had the JB weld material one my manifold for about 2 years now. I had my manifold off last week and the JB weld was still intact. I think as long as it is one solid piece it will be ok. If the whole thing breaks loose it would be too big to cause any major problems.

Could you drill a few pilot holes in the dip and run a few screws into it before the pour, like RacnJsn95 has done on the LFX manifold? That would give the epoxy something more to wrap around and cling to.

that brake fluid idea sounds great. I thought I might put a horizontal bolt through the 'reservoir' like 911medic suggested but i'm a bit worried what material i should use to fill the dip, need a reliable resin.
