LFX v6 oil leaking? Burning?
Ok so I have been doing my oil changes since day 1 with mobil 1 synthetic 5-30
the specs for the car always show I need 6 qts to fill but I always seem to fill perfectly with 5 ( I check the dipstick next couple of days to be sure) But after a month I notice I loose oil. Within 3 months I'm missing a quart of oil! I have no leaks hiting ground and no drips I see. I'm assuming it's being burned up. I'm just reaching 40k miles I tried searching this problem here, does anybody share the same problem or can point me in the right direction? Thanks

Search a little harder. There are many threads on the V6 motor burning oil. By comparison, you're doing extremely well. A lot of people are losing a quart a week or worse.

WOW, mine takes 6 qts at a oil change, does not burn oil and is supercharged. I have no oil loss at 3-4k changes with full synthetic. It should take 6 qts....

Take it to a shop that will do a free diagnosis. Could be still leaking somewhere where it is draining in a non-obvious way. Oil burn on 40k car just sucks. Even for a GM product. That said, it is not out of the realm of possibility. I have had two (well technically three) 5th gens, no oil leak/burn issues. Everything damn else went wrong with them in one way or another, but no oil consumption/leakage.
Question is, are you keeping the car for the long haul (another 50k to 100k) or getting something new in a year or two? If you are getting rid of it in 20k-25k, shove some thicker/heavier high mileage oil that has additional additives in quantity and variety and forget about it. Your oil pump will hate you and your starts will be rougher but you can let the guy who gets the car after you worry about that. If it's a "my grandkid is gunna drive dis!" kind of thing, take it to a shop. |

I have a LLT V-6. My car uses a quart every 1500 miles, alot gets caught in the catch can.
Without the catch can it would be sprayed into the intake manifold and sucked into the cylinders and burned up. I've read stories of people driving without checking the oil and they burn up the motor because all of the oil got burned up. |

I only lost 1 qt at 3500, after that I go 7000 on mobile 1 with a 6qt fill and never need to top off. Now at 25,000.

Yeah I'm going to get rid of this asoon as the warranty goes. I have had dozens of warranties with it. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised this is another real issue for my car. And yeah it really terrifies me when I could only fit 5 quarts. I check the stick and it's good everytime and I don't want to over fill.
I have no catch can so I know my oils all over my intake and valves So I'm going to work on it for a day and take it apart and seafoam the sucker and change the oil once more. If i miss any oil again I'm going straight to the dealer

Every engine burns a little oil, the bigger the engine usually the more it burns.
Synthetic oil burns about twice as fast as regular oil Honestly you shouldn't have used synthetic oil for your first few oil changes if you got the car brand new. Let it break in the seals a bit or you cause problems later on... Just rack up the car and check for leaks otherwise you're just burning it. I burn about a quart every 5,000 miles. Regular oil, not synthetic. I use regular oil on cars until about 20,000, then go synthetic |
