I would hope so. The ZL1 platform (started out as "HP") is 5 years old at least. And it's STILL hanging with the newer technologies from those lesser brands.

Technology moves ahead. Somebody has to be first, second, third, et al. We all win when they all vie for top spot. Enjoy the salad days while it lasts folks, it won't be forever.

Explain to me how a 2012 ZL1 set the standard.
5 years AFTER the 2007 GT500 was released.

Should be interesting to see performance specs of the Challenger.

The 2007 GT500 had lots of hp, but was a pig on the track. It certainly did not handle anything like today's ZL1 and GT500.

Looks like Dodge isn't the only one listening to its consumers.

Exactly.

Which is why you have to wonder why Mustang fans are so proud of the HP produced by the GT500. If it's straight line power you're after, there will always be something faster. If it's not out yet, it soon will be. There's always a bigger fish.

Pound for pound the ZL1 is a better overall car than the GT500. Not one of the comparos from the car enthusiast mags I've read says they prefer the GT500 over the ZL1.

ZL1 is better overall depends on the person. For me I didn't think so. Sure it has performance but the other platforms have better interior features whether it be design, or features. (Digital gauges, Heated/Cooled seats, Blind spot, Collision, Adaptive cruise, etc). The list goes on. After all the 2013 ZL1 finally added a touch screen, they were alittle behind.

That will be tough to do. Consider current pricing...
2014 ZL1 $55,355
2014 GT500 $55,110
2014 SRT8 $45,685

The ZL1 and GT500 each command a $20k increase over the SS/GT. If they can build the Hellcat for only $10k more than the SRT8, I will be impressed. I suspect we will see a MSRP of at least $60-65k.

Other predictions:
  • The GT500 will still be faster in a straight-line.
  • The ZL1 will still be faster around a track.
  • Both will outsell the Hellcat.

Right off the showroom floor it puts 595hp/603ft-lbs to the ground for only $55,000. There is no other automobile on this planet that can do that. Give credit where credit is due.

cause the 2007 drove like crap. they don't even count to me. I remeber driving a 2009 GT500, 2008 challenger, 2008 Z51 back to back. the corvette just handled them all easily. I remeber thinking (no kids then) why would anybody by either of those boat anchors over the corvette. they were all very similar money. I paid 45k for the vette and they other two were right in that same range.

now I get needing a back seat again (kids) but I don't want a boat anchor handling car.

Yes, the car is not out. So the ZL1 is not in 3rd. He'll if you look at it like that, in 4 years the ZL1 may be in 10th.

Looks like Dodge has been behind for 3 years now, it's about time. It took them long enough.

The ZL1 set the standard of an american 2x2 coupe with a high horsepower engine that can also handle as well as the top echelon of performance cars. To my knowledge, this wasn't accomplished in the pony car segment before the '12 ZL1....at least to a significant degree.

My .02
1-the hellcat will be very costly, and has a long way to go to be competant performer against the zl1 and gt500 on something more than just hp figures. Not saying it won't be, I hope it is. Keeps everybody pushing the bar up higher

2- where the hell are these 55k 2014 gt500 I see people talking about. Thats a base price and I haven't seen anything close to that in a retail world. Options, transport, dealer markup's, etc. Seems like a stretch to actually pay 55k for one.

3- The first generation gt500 pretty much sucked. Coming from two previous 03 cobra's. those new gen car's took a big step backwards ( again except in the hp rating, which seems to be the main focus of those car's, not overall performance). I had a mildly modified 08 gt500 and would seriously take a new 5.0 over that car if I was buying a mustang. not impressed
