Mostly it depends on whats more important to you or which has more value to you, Your Time or your Money. Some people do it because they like it but most us do it because we want are car to look good (but hate doing it). I care more about my car then hers I want it done right with expensive product hers I just want it cleaned up carpets shampooed car polished and waxed so it doesn't look like a piece crap when we trade it in. I detail mine inside every few months and outside every few months at different times. Takes a lot time to do both so I never do on same day. I hate it I would rather spend that time cruising or out fishing or playing video games but I am cheap with my toy money and wont waste it on paying someone to do what I can do as well as most (avg detail shop that has kids doing the work) detail shops. My wife on the other hand is a CPA and can make more money an hour working and would rather pay to have hers done (along with our landscaping and lawn care/ this comes out the household money). We both work a lot her 50 hours a week plus commute time me 60-65 hours plus commute time (work almost every holiday and every Saturday/ took Christmas off that's only holiday I have taken in last 5 years and one week vacation a year). Every minute I have out of work I want to spend having fun. So for me the truck gets run through the car wash so does wifes car just wax it every few months to hide and protect from the damage then once every 2 years correct the damage with a full detail (Decon/ speedy prep towel/ compound for paint correction/ polish/ seal/wax). My toy car get hand washed only or if I dont have time Power washed at car wash with the spray both to just get heavy dirt off so it cant get and really bad scratches if someone brushes against it.
 rant over. It's a personal choice.
