Are the Brembos on the SS as good as the V6 as far as....

  • Brake dust.
  • Miles until they need to be replaced.

One thing I love about my 1lt vs my 2004 Ford Lightning is the fact I can go weeks without washing and brake dust never accumulates on the rims and they still look clean and are easy to clean weeks later. My Lightning after a few days after a detail the brake dust on the front rims is already accumulating and then it gets worse from there. Stock pads, aftermarket pads, doesn't matter. The other thing about the 1lt brakes I like is even at 44,000 miles they still look new. I was just wondering how the Brembos faired in this regard. Thanks.

Brake dust, yes...but it's a small price to pay for the stopping power this car needs! I've got very low miles, but all looks as good as new.

How many days/miles would you say the dust starts to become noticeable? Even if I let my car go three weeks I don't notice any dust and that's around 60miles a day 4-to-5 days of the week...

Depends on which pads you use too. I swapped my pads when I upgraded to the brembos. Though I wash my car once a week so if anything builds up I never see it

I'd say a couple days later you can notice some dust if you look closely. Most people never notice, but I can see it. After about 30 miles, I clean them. Not my DD, but depending on the seat time, sometimes I'm cleaning them every morning. I've got it down pretty quick. Wipe with dry micro fiber, then wipe with wax-moistened micro fiber.

This process is just me...I don't know too many people that would do what I do. But I like my wheels shining. I could go longer before cleaning them, but I'm a little OCD about it.

Yes lots of brake dust, but pads show little wear after almost 40,000 miles.

As with tires, the life depends on your driving regimen.

And these Brembos are great brakes, in fact, one of the car's best features.

Unless you are actually tracking the car where brake fade might be a problem, the standard V6 brakes are just as good as far as stopping power goes (tire limited).

Ok, so you have to deal with a little more brake dust but the longevity is there. Check √.

I had the stock SS tires on my V6 (RS package) and thought they sucked. Just cruising back and forth to work I think they lasted a little over a year which is unacceptable to me. I also didn't like how they pick up every little pebble and sling it at the car. I wound up replacing them with General G-MAX AS-03 XL and they are much better for a daily driving conditions except for a little tire roar.

Yea, I've driven about five SS's and the brakes are one of the top two things that stick out right away from the V6'er. Very touchy and strong feeling, lol. Next I would have to say is the off-idle torque down low, but that's a different topic...

GDI... I have had my car for about 3 weeks, after after every wash I notice... 2-3 days later (100-150 miles of driving) my midnight silver wheels turn into much darker, tinted rims. They look great tbh, but its dust... not a color. I guess that's the price I/we pay for stopping power.

I think they would have more stopping power if the ABS wasn't so sensitive. I slammed the brakes to miss a deer one morning and the ABS just felt too damned sensitive. I didn't feel like I was stopping that fast and the brakes where just slipping too much. The ABS kicked on right away on a dry road. It's like when I seen a test of a Camaro or Vette using launch control on Youtube the drivers where actually able to get their best times with the nanny disabled. I think the nannies are a little overly aggressive when they kick in.

No that's not OCD, OCD is when you wash the rims EVERYTIME you pull it out of the garage, yep, that's me. LOL My rims are painted rally yellow on the inside and metallic flake outside, Brake dust is not my friend .

The Brembos are pretty dusty but, as you say, the Midnight Silver rims don't readily show it. Just don't touch 'em, if you're not prepared to clean them. The new style rims are very easy to clean - takes me less than 15 minutes to have them spotless.

the dust really is not much of a problem unless you don't clean it, then it gets harder to clean. we have cars come in at work that it takes some heavy scrubbing to balance
