It is most likely the sound of the driveline slacking. Since the car has an independent rear when you disengage the clutch everything "settles" and when you re-engauge it tightens up again. Some people get a little concerned do to the unexpected nature but it is normal.

The dealer gave me bullentin number 03-07-29-004h manual transmission operating characteristics it goes over basic information, cold operation, gear rattle, neutral rattle, backlash, shift effort, non synchronized gears. So with all that said no matter what noise your car is making they have an excuse for it in this document. I think it's unacceptable for a 40 thousand dollar car to make this sound.

Drive train slack. There are at least 5 places where this sound will transfer from. Normal. Continue going to McDonalds. All is well with your car.

I have the same issue on a 2013 SS. I took it to the dealer and they said it was "normal... for now". Not sure what that means.

That clunking sound you hear is normal. I freaked out too when I first got the car. However, this is how it's built (why, I don't know; ask GM). You will get used to it. Nowadays, I cant even make that noise happen even if I wanted to. You just have to get used to the car.

Im glad you revived this thread. I just bought a 2010 ss with 3,000 on it. (Was kept in a garage for the past 4 years). I notice this sound only when disengaging the clutch in first gear..with a load on it. Ive learned to just step on the clutch slowly and this doesnt happen. The theory about the driveline slack seems to make sense. But I agree that a 30k+ car shouldn't make that sound. I think we're okay though. Doing one or two burn outs is probably worse for your car than any "weird" sounds you're hearing

As for $30-40,000 cars making driveline noises. Just remember how clunky and finicky expensive Ferrari transmissions were when they still made cars with manual transmissions... Drive and enjoy, all cars have their quirks no matter the price. |
