Went to my dealership today and asked about the recall, they have no idea what they are expected to do. I for one won't be changing out my key. I have no other keys attached to my key and I can't see how my knee or other part of my body could bump it and turn the car off.

I've been looking. I know it's here, I clicked on it a few weeks ago but I can't seem to find it now.

it will be the same key cut you already have..

all they will do is cut the none-switchblade style key to the existing cut you already have and program the fob to your car..

there are already several pictures of it in this thread, but here it is again:

all it is, is a separate key and fob, in the exact same key cut you have now.. so your key cut will not change and all locks will work with a single key.

I boldfaced "made at home depot". This should indicate to you I am addressing that part of the quote.

I'm not asking for a source for the price of the key we already have. I am asking about the bullshit statement about the replacement keys that nobody has actually seen yet being made "at home depot".
I understand know. I don't think he literally meant Home Depot, I think he was referring to that type of a plain Jane key that was like every other car key in the 1980's

I say give us keyless Camaro and then the problem gone.

Honestly this would seem easier to hit with my knee then the one we have. Makes no sense!

As long as I end up with a key that will start my Camaro, all is good.

There are a LOT more things in life to get upset over than a key.

Now if they take my key away and make me use one of those old-fashioned big cranks at the front of the car to turn the engine over to start it, THEN, i'll get mad.

Till then, Gentlemen, start your engines and move along.........

my take is that the 2 part key (separate key and fob) entices people to hang more shit from the key ring and would cause more of an issue.

for those of us that only have the switchblade key with nothing attached to it, we won't ever experience the issue.

the real problem isn't the key, it is:

1: the location of the key, I mean why is GM the only car maker still putting the key on the column? seriously?

2: the command start feature, that doesn't have the PUSH TO TURN feature, or a separate button next to the key required to turn the key backward to turn off the vehicle. i.e locking the key in the on position until the button is pressed AND the key turned at the same time.

but the bottom line for me is this:

just about every other car maker has adopted the keyless start technology, why hasn't GM?

I completely understand the need for a key for a truck, especially for commercial or fleet vehicles, because if guy 1 has the fob and starts the truck and guy 2 takes off in the truck with the fob still in guy 1's pocket you have an issue.

but for the normal everyday person like most of us, the keyless technology should be mainstream by now, it is no more expensive that keyed technology in the grand scheme of auto production.. The RFID system is already in place, the keyless entry system is already in place, and the keyed ignition is already in place, all that is needed is to replace the key with a button..

or at the very least do what GM did to the CTS-wagon:

that is not a key, it is not a button, it is an ignition switch that has a permanent key like design, and works like push button start, as long as the fob is INSIDE the vehicle the device will turn and start the vehicle if the fob is not inside the vehicle the device won't turn.

Will owners be forced to make the change to the new key? Or can we decide if we want the new key or not? I personally don't want to lug around a separate key and button fob.

While this is true, its a feature about our cars the at least 85% really like as being shown by the poll. And changing it solves nothing.

Imagine if GM said that something might fly out of your back seat at highway speed and might cause someone behind you to get into an accident. And they say this because something flew out of three Camaros and nearly, but didn't cause an accident. Because of this there a preforming a recall that permanently prevents you from opening your convertible top. They could design a removable cover that prevents objects from flying out of your back seat, but permanently disabling the top is easier. Doesn't change that you can drive your car the same way you always have. Just cant use a feature that you like and that you paid for.

I don't mind giving up a feature for something just as good or better. But I do have a problem with downgrading to something that doesn't solve the perceived issue.

Agreed, but I'm not going to hold my breath, this is GM after all, lol. GM wants to be able to have the standpoint of "look we did something even though nobody really made us", and the key, which doesnt change the car itself, is the easiest solution
