Defective tire? (pic)

Whats going on here?

I called tire rack and they said send a pic in which I did today. Tire is only 3 months old and is splitting like that? The front tires where purchased a year earlier and are perfect. What can I expect tirerack to say based on this pic I sent them? Also, how thick are these tires? Is it safe to drive like this? Splits are about 3 to 4cm deep. Is the warranty process long? How soon should I expect an answer? Should I just buy new rear tires and have them reimburse me later if they say they'll replace them? I hope they don't blow out. I always buy my tires from them, I hope they take care of me.

I can't just take it back because I ordered online from Tirerack. I sent them the picture of it they requested but the question is will they replace the tire based on the pic I sent them and how long will the process take? Either way I think I'm just going to order a new tire online tonight so that I'm not stranded with a flat or wrecked. I CAN'T miss any days of work so hopefully the tire will hold up a few days until the new one ships. I'm the type of person to always swerve pot holes and my rims with 46,000 miles are pristine with no curb rash or anything so I know it's also not from grinding a curb or something. But anyway, you can clearly see it's just purely splitting open.

They Have to be able to see that its defective and i'm sure they will make it right by replacing the tire.

What brand tire is that. And yes they should replace it. My biggest concern is you driving on it. I would be extra careful if you must use it. No Highway driving at all.

They may contest it... the pic LOOKS like the tire hit a curb at about 30 MPH, the way the shoulder line dips (could just be the way the tread blocks sit at that spot, though), and the wrinkled appearance of the sidewall in that area. Just saying: Prepare for battle.

If he hit anything would not there be a scuff mark where the split is. If anything it looks like the sidewall has cracked. Like the Goodyears that were exposed to below freezing temps.

Hi guys, definitely no curb hit. I can go out and take another pic zoomed out and the rim has no marks. Everyone knows these rims curb rash super easy and you can gouge out the rims really bad and still not bother the tire so there would DEFINITELY be curb rash on the rim to make cracks in the tire THAT big. Also, the tire wasn't exposed to freezing temps as I bought them after the winter. The brand is General and they're the GMAX that are popular with the Camaro. I used the stock PZERO's over the winter in -0 degree temps and there was no cracks or broken treads on them, they where just getting worn down.

The front tires which are the same brand did get used through the winter in freezing temps which I bought last year are mint all the way around. I believe I got a defective tire. My worry is even if they look at the pic and know it's defective are they still going to try to weasel out of replacing it? Either way, I'm going to have to order a new one tonight and if they replace it I'll either ask for a refund or keep another one for a spare. Dammit this sucks. I wish there was a place to go get the same tire in stock installed today on Sunday! I'd be happy with buy one, get one free and just shit-can both my current rear tires for safety reasons. Sucks they're only three months old!

Sorry you are having to deal with this, but this is one of the main reasons that I decided not to buy my last set of tires(Nitto Motivos) online.

I wanted the Vreds, but could not find them locally. So it meant if I had a problem I was going to be in the same boat you are in now.

They WILL replace the tire under the manufacturer warranty. Question is how long will it take for them to send the replacement to you.

Worked at Discount Tire/America's Tire. What PSI are you driving on? What's the DOT date? Looks like you drove over something on the road to cause this, or possibly some extreme temperature conditions.

If you buy your tires from DTC/ATC you can buy warranty certificates that would cover this 100% and be out in less than a hour.

It's hard to tell in a picture how bad it is. There is no way it is 4cm deep, the sidewall isn't that thick, unless it is a run-flat tire, which I highly doubt it is.

Tire holds air and is around 35psi on a cool morning then jumps up to 38psi when warm. I'll get the date of the tire, it's on the sidewall I assume? Definitely didn't drive over anything, to make that damage, I would of DEFINITELY felt and/or heard something.

Ok where it says DOT right after is says A3LP NYLV 0114. Is that the date? If not, where do I look? There's numbers everywhere all over the tire, lol.

0114 is the date. That mean the tire was manufactured on the first week of the year of 2014.

What temperatures have you had recently? If it got really really cold it could possibly cause that.
