Exhaust opinions?

Ok, I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to this but after four tries and two months of tinkering I still haven't found a combination that I'm currently 100% satisfied with. Here is a brief history of my configuration:

1. Picked up the car with straight pipes welded in instead of mufflers - was too loud for my taste and boomy sounding throughout the rev range.

2. Put on a set of stockers - too quiet! Actually this was even quieter than the stock exhaust on my G8 GXP was.

3. Installed a set of SW long tube headers with high flow cats. Still too quiet but now sounded better at higher RPMs.

4. Installed a set of GMPP touring mufflers to replace the stockers. Much better now, especially at > 3500 RPM, great quality sound at those RPMs. I still don't quite like how it sounds at < 3500 RPM though. Although better than straight pipes the sound is kind of nondescript and a little boomy to my ears.

Here is what I'm considering as my next possible steps:

- NPP. This may solve the low-rpm issue but the mufflers look suspiciously a lot like my GMPP touring mufflers. Will this really be an improvement?

--OR--

- Corsa. I ran a similar combo (Long Tubes + Corsa) on my first G8 and loved the sound. Much more interesting and distinct than what I get on the Camaro. The mufflers that come with Corsa's Camaro system look different though, smaller in particular. I'm not really looking for more volume.

I would really appreciate any opinions on the two options above or any other suggestions.

Anyone? Corsa vs. NPP?

I think it's drone that's bothering you. Very common once the stock muffler is removed. You would need a muffler with a drone solution like Solo. I think Corsa has no drone as well, but not 100% sure.

There is a small bit of drone on my current setup at about 1600-1700 RPM, but that's easily avoidable and doesn't bother me at all. It's the quality of sound at low RPMs that I don't like. I'm looking for something a bit brighter or more exotic sound perhaps. I seem to remember that Corsa was that way on my G8 so maybe I will just go with that.

I've been in cars running various Solo systems and wasn't impressed at all. I know they get hyped up here and are very active on the boards in general but as for actual sound quality, I didn't like it.

When I got my Camaro I got a great deel on a Magnaflow street car back system which overall I am happy with. If I could do it all over again, I would keep the stock system and get the Noweeds diverters. That way I can have it as quiet as I want for freeway driving with family, and as loud as I want whenever. Remember that cat back systems only affect sound and is not a power adder. You will need headers or hi flow cats for that.

Got long tubes and high flow cats already, and got the car dyno tuned at Livernois, runs like a beast

It's just the sound part I'm trying to nail down. I think the X-Pipe suggestion from above could work, but in that Case the Corsa system would be a cleaner install since it already comes with an X-Pipe.

Personally I like the 3" Magnaflow comp cat-back with LT headers. I haven't priced them in a long time but they used to be a lot cheaper than Corsa.

I think a real popular setup is LT headers with either 3" Magnaflow, Corsa, or Borla S. I will say that I listened to my car next to a Borla S setup and they sounded almost exactly the same. Again, Borla is usually way more expensive than Maganaflow.

Everyone has their own opinion on what sounds good and what has or doesn't have any or too much drone. Your best bet before you just start tossing money around is to see if you can hook up with a group of 5th Gens in your area and listen to different setups in person.

Call Tyler or Jordan over at JDPMotorsports.com. They sell a bunch of performance and exhaust parts for our cars. They also race a 5th Gen and have a bunch of hands on experience with different Mfg of parts. See what they recommend after you tell them what you're looking for.

I've heard the Borla S system before - too loud with headers for my taste.

If that one is too loud then you'll probably need to stick to something like the Borla Touring. You're not going to have that many options for a system that is much quieter than a Borla S or 3" Magnaflow.

Borla Touring, maybe the NPP system or you'll probably need to add the resonated X-pipe to your LTs and OEM mufflers.

From my understanding the Corsa is similar to the Borla S and 3" Magnaflow. Fairly mild until you get on it some and then it will really wake up.

I'm not currently running stock mufflers, my current setup is SW long tubes with high flow cats, stock mid-section running into GMPP touring mufflers which many say are similar to Borla Touring. They also look similar to NPP mufflers.

I think I will try to find someone local with either long tubes with NPP or long tubes with Corsa to listen to and go from there. From what I remember of running Corsa with long tubes on the G8 is it was about the same volume wise as my current setup and louder at WOT. I think it sounded more interesting overall.

I love the smooth deep sound of my Borla S type mufflers.

The Borla S is the mid level sound. The attack is the most aggressive.
