I don't think the solution is the plastic "knee guard" The cost to tool this design, not to mention the time involved makes this a non-starter.

The solution is separate key and fob. Reason for this is that the key and separate fob already exist and work with the Camaro ignition switch. Nothing to prototype, no tool design, faster delivery. All GM needs to do is ramp up production of the key and fob to cover all Camaro's involved.

GM was only considering the new key and separate fob, as this will cure the knee hitting the extended switchblade fob and the possibility of shutting off the car. A dangling fob will not rotate the key in the ignition to shut off the car....not enough leverage.

Here's the latest and greatest..............

The recall will require separating the key from the fob
and replacing the key. The original key will be scrapped.

The customer can contact the dealer to have parts ordered
and once they arrive can have the recall performed. The
customer brings the car to the dealer with the car,
proof of ownership and both sets of keys. The fobs will
be reworked and the new keys programmed.

New vehicles will begin shipping from Oshawa on June 23rd
with the new key and fob.

Becky so my question we will have a hole in the key fob on the side where the key was and where the release button was correct?

So, the original key fob remains, the old key is removed and a new key is cut, keeping the new key separated from the fob. Does the new key look like some of the pics we have seen on the web?

And with this information, any idea when the sales hold comes off?

What about current Camaro's that will be traded in on another Camaro? Will dealers make you change the current fob before they will take your car in trade or will they convert the fobs themselves after the car is traded in?

My best guess on the above design is molded, hard plastic, sort of scalloped "wing" extension that blocks/prevents the knee from hitting the key fob and causing the problem. The molded wing could be made as an integral part of the plastic steering column cover assembly.

Presumably, this is a simpler fix, effective fix, and faster fix than making new keys and key fob replacements. For those of you that already have Camaros (my Z/28 stuck at dealer) you would be able to imagine this fix on your cars better than I.

This is just plain crazy.

I ordered my 2SS/RS last september, been a crazy wait. This is in Sweden btw. It finally arrived in Sweden this Monday. But now it's stuck in the harbour and GM woun't ship it to my dealer until it's fixed.

And no one can give me any time frame.

Told dealer that he has next week to get some info, if not I'll drop the deal. But that will hurt.

Later it will hurt even more when it finally arrives, and some one else will buy it.

This thing makes me go nuts...
