Camaro Key Recall - Will we be able to keep the original keys?

I'm 6'-3" and there is no way my knee can hit the key fob. My thigh hits the bottom of the steering wheel first, so my knee is far from the fob even when I try to hit the fob. The problem with the ignition turning off occurs when drivers have a bunch of heavy crap hanging off the fob and the weight actually contributes to the key turning to the off or accessories position while driving. Obviously, all that crap hanging down can allow your knee to hit it (the crap) and cause a problem. Take the crap off your fob = no problem. Note: this is also more likely to happen with short people who have the seat up closer to the wheel. It's not a "tall people" thing at all.

I suspect you will either have to have the switchblade changed out OR... sign a waiver of responsibility if you "choose" not to have the key changed. This is a total safety recall - eventually you will have to do one or the other. Not doing anything is not an option. Someone, either you or GM, has to have responsibility for this potentially dangerous situation.

There are already advertisements on TV stating: "If you or anyone in your family has been injured due to this faulty ignition, call... (some ambulance chasing law firm) NOW". Just saw it on the TV.

You will get a recall letter in the mail. You can choose to ignore it, or call the dealer and order the new keys. If you take your car in for service, the dealer will remind you of the recall. If you refuse, you will have to sign a waiver releasing GM from all liability of you not following the recall. The dealer CANNOT make you do the recall, but signing the waver and refusing or not answering the recall letter will make you personally liable if anything related to the recall causes an accident...and your insurance will not cover it.

This discussion I pretty funny. So many "I ain't doin' nothing" responses. HA! Well, if you never have to take your car to a dealership, you may get by with that. But, if you have to go in for warranty work or service... I guarantee you will either get the new keys OR sign a waiver relieving GM from any responsibility regarding this issue. I'm sure if you want to take that chance, GM will let you - provided you relieve them of any responsibility.

It may cost more but I am sure they could get a hell of a deal on push button start systems when buying 500k of them vs a crappy ass key. A lot of us paid 40-55-75k for our cars and this is what we get? No thanks.

I am sure it's a hit to the wallet but I am also sure that they made enough money off each car to provide an adequate fix vs some half assed approach.

I will not be giving them anything. For legal/insurance reasons I will install a push button start system myself.

Lol well I think it's rare for somebody to carry both sets with them anyway. And if its required that you have to hand in both sets, then that's something that could prevent them from changing keys without your permission when you went in for service.

I just responded to a short survey/questionnaire I received from GM via email this afternoon. It was asking if I would be willing to spend $150.00 out of pocket for a push button start retrofit.

Hasn't every manufacturer, every dealer, and every auto repair shop always told every single driver of any kind of car not to have too much weight on their keys?

Next recall will be because the passenger can reach over and turn the key off
