Gettin' Some Work Done......
Well, my 2012 SS is heading into the body shop
Vinyl stripe issue. OEM rally stripe on my hood is peeling. Tried to get GM to cover it to no avail. Dealer feels it's from a rock chip and the General won't cover it under warranty so they won't put in a claim. Whatever. I knew those stripes were going to be trouble when I bought the car. As an extra special bonus I noticed that my bumper cover is flexed and looks rippled. Never would have noticed if the light hadn't caught it quite right when I was washing it the other day. Looks like someone backed into it on the passenger side by the marker light. UGH! Body shop is going to take off the cruddy OEM rally striping and do a metallic black painted stripe on the hood, deck lid and spoiler. They are also going to fix the bumper cover and re-paint it if fixing the flex doesn't solve the ripple. On the bright side, the hood will have a nice new clear coat on it. Gotta tell myself something to keep my spirits up. |

You'll be much happier with painted stripes

I get why vinyl is used for OEM... its cost effective and I'm sure masking off and spraying stripes at a factory level would be very difficult to do.
That being said, so many issues would be alleviated if the things were just painted on to begin with. Sucks to put your car in the shop, but sounds like you'll be coming out better in the end.

Cost me about $1600 for high-gloss stripes on the hood, trunk lid and spoiler as well as a bumper repair. This includes a clear-coat spray of the hood, trunk and spoiler. If you take out the $300 for the bumper repair the striping alone was about $1300.

Here are some quick and dirty pix of the new painted stripes.
I'll post better ones once I have a chance to wash / wax. Last edited by swiftdog01; 07-05-2014 at 08:53 AM. |

You should not wax fresh paint. It needs to gas out for at least 60-90 days. You can wash it though.

Those stripes look great Swiftdog! Looks like my brother's '69 from long ago. I'm hoping to replace my vinyl stripes someday, maybe next spring....
