Voiding warranty with hood scoop?
I have a 14 LS and I'm planning to put a hood scoop on it. Anyone know if this sort of mod voids the warranty?
Thanks |

Dealers have no say on voiding the warranty. All that differs with a dealer is whether or not they go to bat for you in a warranty claim to gm or not.

![]() The only impact the dealership has on it is if they are going to give you a hard time and try to rip you off. If they are one of those kinds of places you need to find a new one. |

I will speak from personal experience. Not hear say. I purchased a brand new 2012 in May of 2012. It was not the RS model and came with the 18in painted rims. When back in the following week to buy the 20in rims and tires out of the dealers accessory catalog and was informed by the service sept that if I change ANYTHING on the car even with items from the catalog it would void the ENTIRE warranty. I called BS. They then provided me with a paper from GM that in fact states the same thing. I even contacted GM directly and got a case number and argued it for 3 weeks. Even my salesman argued it with GM for me. And in the end GM REFUSED to budge. I even found an identical (except color) car in town, got his build sheet and presented it to GM along with my build sheet since the ONLY differences were the color of the cars and that his had the 20in rims on it. Still they refused and said if I changed anything it WILL void the warranty. And yes I even brought of the Munson Moss act. The dealership even called it total BS. GM told me it's my car, do what I want with it. But if something goes wrong they CAN deny any warranty work. Now since then I have purchased another new Camaro a 13 with the features I want. Yeah yeah I know give me a lecture for buying a second one after being screwed over. Anyway I did it cause my dealership is "working with me" if anything ever happens. And no I won't say what that means. But bottom line GM CAN void the ENTIRE warranty for ANY changes if they want. I recommend you not take my word for it and research it FULLY yourself. And yes I can back all of this up.

Did you know that if you are WILDLY PARANOID, you could put the factory rims back on with simple tools for warranty service? Now, if you lower or lift your car, and you want them to fix a broken suspension component, then you should worry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act
ftermarket parts or modifications: This aspect of warranty coverage has a great deal of gray area. Although many dealers would have you think otherwise, simply having an aftermarket part or modifying your vehicle cannot void your warranty. Some dealerships may say, for example, that just because you have a performance part such as a cold air intake on the car that the whole vehicle warranty is void, says Loren Wong, a car enthusiast and a former warranty administrator for BMW and Acura. "That's not true," he says. The saving grace for consumers is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. The act states that a dealer must prove that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before it can deny warranty coverage. However, if the reason for a parts failure is unclear, a dealer will usually charge you to diagnose the vehicle. If the aftermarket part was not properly installed or a modification led to a component failure, it is within the dealer's right to void the warranty for that part, and you will have to pay for the repairs out of pocket. If the aftermarket parts had nothing to do with the repairs in question, you will be refunded the fee for the diagnosis. Any aftermarket performance parts on your vehicle can cause a dealer to suspect that you either drive the car hard or possibly race it. "Although they may not void warranties," Wong added, "modifications may raise a red flag when vehicles are in for service. If consumers who mod their cars do a little research, they may find certain dealerships that are a little more 'mod-friendly.'" |
