Wait... this car was special to your family. Your FIL traded it in instead of selling it directly to you? Why? You're now paying more than he got for it as a trade, why not just sell it to you for what they gave in trade?

You made a deal and PAID FOR a car, and AFTER you did that, they were in the process of tearing the motor apart?

Did I get the story wrong? If not the whole thing sounds fishy to me.

Why didn't you just buy it direct from your Father in law?

Why not? They misrepresented the vehicle to you.

How did this thread make it one post without this?

He sold for less than you would've paid, and you paid more than he would have sold for.

Talk about a poorly executed deal.

How do you know the dealer effed the car up. 12 miles of abuse is nothing.

UPDATE: when the tech was compression testing it, it bled off fast then he whacked it with a hammer and the valve seated and quit bleeding off... so that indicates a valve problem but when they took the head off the valves looked fine???

Why 2 threads with the same information?
Why didn't you just buy it from your father in law?
Who much $ did the dealer mark it up to sell to you?
It was in their possession legally over the weekend so what is the point you are trying to make about the 12 miles? Cars that are traded in get driven by the dealer for various reasons. 12 miles shouldn't be enough to hurt a zl1.
Is it modded at all? Are the tires or clutch gone?
You bought it and signed the paperwork as a used car.
I would think the only hope you have is a warranty fix since you own it.
Hope it works out for you!

Um yea, why isn't it an option? You buy a car from them, don't even get it off the lot and the engine is cooked? Void the deal.

This is exactly the same thing I was thinking while reading the OP's story. Inquiring minds want to know...

It wasn't very special if FIL traded it.

Go get a different one.

they gave him 48k for the trade I paid 44500 out the door, so they made their money in the marked up truck so I think I got a great deal... anyways the story goes like this..

the car was parked on the lot I pulled up looked at it and then went inside and made the deal on it.. they pulled it around to get detailed while I was in the sales office, we got done and came out side and the salesman wanted to go over the features on the car ( I knew them by heart but he wanted to refresh himself I guess) and that's when we noticed the rough idel and CEL and crap

Something screwed up with that motor. If he smacked it with a hammer and it sealed there was either debris on the valve seat or a bent valve. I would stick a borescope camera in the spark plug hole and look at the top and edges of the piston. I would also pull the head and have the valves checked. This should all be done on the dealers dime. I wouldn't drive it off without those things being done. Borescope at the very least.

Okay. You lost me. Pretty sure no way this is true. Not how things work at a dealership.
