SLP Under-drive pulley didn't last 3 weeks!
********* UPDATE **********
As of 9/7/2014 -- all resolved. GPI sent the refund from TSP and now, were done. Not sure what the issue was that caused the failure. Not heard back from TSP yet. Would like to know in the future... As of 8/10/2014 -- not heard back from TSP (or GPI). I know GPI can't do anything until they hear back from TSP -- just wondering what the issue is. I sent the pulley back the very same day I received the RMA -- would like to know the next steps. I also PM'd TSP the same date and still waiting for any info/status. Oh, and no 'credit/refund' yet -- wondering about that too... -Don Well today, 7/21/2014 got the pulley from JDP -- ATI -- looks nice and once you put the hub on, you can remove the front pulley for rebuild (back pulley is for AC and is the standard belt/pulley). SO, wanna see a defective PULLEY? This thing just blew up -- I mean, junked. I have about 1500 miles on it in 3 weeks -- wow BTW, still have NOT heard back from Texas Speed and they've known about my situation since Monday of last week -- go figure... JDP (Tyler) FTW! Here we go: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here, the GUTS are fried: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The pulley is 'raised' here... ![]() Now, this car has never been raced or to the track with these updates -- No races what-so-ever The SAGA on what I had to do to get this thing off -- is another story -- I'll detail the steps I had to follow to get this off - Automatics are different than sticks! Tranny lines get in the way ;o) -Don ****** End Update *********** Got it from GPI (who got it from Texas Speed I think). I've had it on 3 weeks and drove about 1500 miles when today, @ 4 PM -- rush hour here in DFW -- both belts slipped off! So, 100 degree day, no ac and all the bells and whistles going off saying engine overhead and idle the engine -- this in about 10 to 20 seconds! So pulled off, contact onstar for the tow home. Call Ryan @ GPI and he helped me confirm it was a faulty under-drive pulley. GPI is sending out a new one to me so I can get this going but I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue... Also, I know there are a set of tools to hold the flywheel while you put it on. I have impact tools, air compressor so taking it off won't be an issue. Ryan did say there is an LS3 pulley install tool. If you know anyone that has one I can use (locally since I'm in DFW) or good place to buy the tools, I would appreciate it. Thanks! -Don Last edited by hammdo; 07-01-2017 at 04:33 PM. |

Is there a specific purpose for this mod? If not, I would reconsider keeping it on your motor. Stock pulleys are far superior and much more reliable. Get your HP increases elsewhere without impacting things like your alternator and power steering.

Yes, 5 to 6 hp increase @ the wheels -- less drag on the engine. This product has been around since 2009 and used quite often. Many use it with SC's.
Thanks! |

Just now reading this... Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm considering an ATI UD, and I watched a video on installation. Do you know exactly what went wrong with the pulley to cause the belts to slip off?

yep, it uses what appears to be vulcanized rubber to hold the 'belt' pulley on. It's separated and wobbles now -- thus causing both belts to slip. I can grab that part of the pulley and its wobbles by hand. I may have been that '1' where you get a bad one, but Ryan has seen this on another one. SLP has had these for a while and I'm not seeing too many complain.
Are you looking @ the ATI 10%? I do like that is tune-able and rebuild-able too... Does kinda suck she's down over a $250 'new' part. GPI is getting me a replacment, now to find those tools.... |

I'm going to get the ATI Damper Puller and Installers 918999 with the additional ATI Damper Tool Installation Studs 918999SC for the LS series engines.
I'm seriously considering the ATI 10% now. I loose confidence in a product when I hear about > 1 incident of this type of failure. Not a small thing since this caused the engine to get really hot before I could pull over (everything was warning me -- and the oil life went from 80% to 0% after the heat-up) so oil change is necessary too. The oil/trans temps never got over normal but the engine must have since the water pump did not work with the belt off... |

That is good to know. I'm thinking about an electric water pump though -- would still run with the belt off - kinda like that idea...
They do make one and it adds 'bolt on' hp too... Gonna check that out... Here's a link: http://www.jegs.com/i/Meziere/680/WP...2/-1?viewAll=1 and it fits L99 too... http://www.tellezmotorsports.com/MEZWP329N.php |

I have a Powerbond pulley, bought used, and an ATI bolt. Got 10K on mine. Sorry to hear about this hiccup.

This video is about assembly of the ATI unit (not so great, but might have some useful info):
And this one explains a tool that the author made as a way to push the ASP balancer on... I'm sure there better ones out there besides these. I'm just going to have LG install mine. I'll be interested to hear/read your opinions whichever route you take regardless Don.

Sounds like you got a bad one. Call TSP to have them replace it. There are LOTS of cars running that UDP without an issue.

Thanks -- yes, GPI is on that -- Ryan and I spoke (while I was on the side of the road) when we diagnosed the problem -- TS is closed today so it won't be taken care of 'till Monday. I agree that I must have received a bad one -- but still sucks. The electric water pump though would have prevented the 'over-heated' situation -- still thinking about that one...
as they say -- 'pay to play'... Part of the deal -- still -- the car 'looks' beautiful sitting. The tow operator told me he pulled off to the side just to take pictures of it on the flatbed...
