Does anyone remember this happening on the East Coast? And for all we know it could be the same bunch except just moved to the West Coast.

Probably a different group though.

Absolutely horrible. I am so sorry for your loss, and for everyone else who has been a victim recently.

First, it does not know the car has moved. You need to call in to Lojack to start a stolen car report, and Lojack then activates the device. Local police have (hopefully) a receiver in tier car that can track the stolen vehicle with the Lojack transmitter in it...it does NOT use GPS to display where the car is. You are totally dependent on the police with a receiver in their car to find your car.

If you left your car for a couple of hours, and then found out it was taken, that's enough time for your car to be taken and delivered to a chop shop.

I was involved with a GPS tracking product that notified you as soon as it's internal GPS sensed the car moved without the ignition on by sending a text message to your cell phone. You called the tracking center, filed a quick theft report while the center was tracking your car. they called police and told them where you car was heading or where it had stopped.

There are a couple of aftermarket products that will do this...check them out.
Still better than nothing, considering the lojack was free with the car. The dealership said they install lojack on every single new car they sell
and as a daily driver i pretty much know exactly where my car is at all times, and it is usually in eyesight. i doubt they'd tow it out of my driveway or in mid daylight in front of my shop. the car is rarely anywhere else

I feel like cars are FAIRLY safe here in Montana.

I'm pretty attached to my car, but I would say that my biggest fear wouldn't be that the car is stolen and then parted out, but rather it's stolen and then found really banged up. If the car is just gone, that's easier to fix than dealing with the cost of repairing.

Maybe that's just me.

Very sad we are a society where we have to spend so much time, effort, and money to protect our personal property. Sad that police are so overwhelmed with crime that home burglaries and auto theft can seldom be investigated because it is "victimless". If caught jails so over crowded the criminals spend little time locked up and they know that.
I am ancient enough to remember when this type of crime was not an issue with the average person. My family always had a convertible from the mid 50s - 60s and never worried about leaving it parked on a city street with top down, even when we lived in San Francisco. I drove convertibles into the early 80s and frequently left parked top down into the 80s. Family only had one auto stolen in the 1960s. We lived on a high security Air Force Base and our family convertible was parked in our drive, top down, keys in the car (no fear). We lived in officers housing, only two entry/exit check points on the base, auto clearly marked with officer tags as Dad was base commander. A young GI thought he could impress his girlfriend driving a nice convertible but fast learned he could not get the car off base. Long story short, auto was found parked near the golf course within hours. Finger prints identified him within a few more hours. Within 24 hours arrested. This young guy could have been court martialed and put away for a few years but Dad had a sense of humor. Instead of court martial Dad transferred him to the most remote Alaska military base where he wouldn't be tempted to drive a convertible.
OP, sorry you had this experience when just moving to a new area, as if changing jobs and relocating is not stressful enough.

I live in vallejo.. often worry about my car too. Although it's not a v8 I'm sure some punk would try. But in hindsight this is why I have USAA.

I used to live in a small street in Santa Cruz in one of the safest neighborhoods. Yet, somehow some drunk driver found their way to my street and totaled my BMW.

no use living in fear or worry, best way to deal with it is preparedness

True.. But still. Even if insurance replace the car, cannot replace the sentimental value. It just sucks that we need to be worried. Good thing CA is allowing to have a conceal weapon now. Maybe I need to apply for it and be prepare for when that happens.. Just saying..

I hear ya..! I just don't want to be angry or worried. Go apply for a CCW we've always been able to; what was recently changed is that we don't have to show "cause for applying" .

My only qualm with CCW is that if I had to get one I wouldn't be able to choose which of mine to carry .

Good luck though, stay vigilant, stay aware and stay safe.

Not gonna do you much good unless they try to car jack you with you in the car. If you lay out some asshole because you stumbled upon him trying to steal your car, you will be in for a trip to chino. You need to have a reasonable fear for your life.
